My experiences have spanned all ages and types of children's learning abilities. From a church setting, to a public school to a driver training car. As a substitute teacher, I worked on developing a good rapport with the students. And was always willing to assist them in working towards understanding the concepts before them. I am very patient and understanding with the children, because a stressful environment is not conducive to learning. Students generally perform better with hands-on practice. I provide multiple opportunities for hands-on and guided practice as time permits. Associate new concepts to familiar ones. Our memories are largely associative in nature. Therefore, providing connections from new concepts back to well established ones increases our retention and recall. This is especially important in building up understanding in mathematics. Provide relevant examples. A student who is actively enaged in the lesson will learn more.
For the past two years, I have been working as an adjunct instructor and tutor in mathematics and computer information systems for a local Community College. This experience has been so fulfilling, that I am diligently pursuing a career change from Information Technology professional to teaching.
