History and English: NOT BORING! RELEVANT!!

Motivation. Hard work is made even harder when we don't enjoy the subject; for example, History can easily become boring and impossible to follow for young, energetic minds. When these events are brought to life, however, and made personally relevant to the student as part of our shared past, we may inspire curiosity which is the prime quality of a young scholar. Grammar and literature can also be tiresome and difficult, but their relevance is much easier to validate as reading and writing will always be crucial skills for our future leaders.
As a recent graduate of the University of Oregon History Department, I have spent the last two years working with peers to enhance their ability to research, comprehend, and explain historical events through writing. This experience includes courses in Grammar and Literature as well as History of both the U.S. and the world. With a string ... read more

More About This Tutor...

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in the written word. While pursuing further understanding of a wide range of literature, I earned a BA degree in English literature while maintaining a focus in Philosophy, a core element to critical thinking. Throughout my student life, I combined the grammatical and structural skills necessary to form clear, concise arguments for research papers with the craft of fiction writing to mutually bolster each other in kind. In the eight years since, I’ve worked as a fiction writer, a report writer, and recently as a columnist. I’ve organized and lead writer’s workshops, co-founded a write-your-own-material theater group, and I am well read.

This year I have acted as a GTF in the following courses: Phil 110 (Human Nature), Phil 102 (Ethics), and PHil 170 (Philosophy of Love and Sex). As a Writing Associate at Swarthmore College (2002-2005), I was hired and trained by Swarthmore College to tutor Swarthmore students in academic writing. I conference with the students of an assigned course to aid them in revising essays for that course. I advised students on a drop-in basis at Writing Center. Teaching is my passion. I am very close to my students, and I pride myself on making a personal connection with my students and being able to address their individual needs. As a young teacher, I am fully prepared to take on the responsibilities of my own classroom, but I am always looking for ways to improve my pedagogical approach and thus look forward to working with peers and supervisors.
Because I was a grad student in English, I have ample experience writing and editing. I was able to individually tutor fellow students through the years and thus have experience working one-on-one with students. At both the Institute of Reading Development and CSULB I had the chance to work with all ages, nationalities, and ability levels, something I found immensely enjoyable. Although these jobs were focused on teaching in front of a classroom, they also supplied me with ample time to wo ... read more

My bachelor's degree from University of Missouri-Columbia is in Political Science. I also minored in Art History. I have done extensive research in each of these areas and feel competent to teach or tutor either. In 2005 I joined the U.S. Peace Corps as a TEFL teacher. I taught English to Mongolian students from elementary school to adults in both classroom and individual settings for two years. Other areas I have in-depth knowledge in are English Literature, Poetry, Philosophy and Psychology. I am currently refreshing and adding to the French I studied at the university and feel that I could competently teach it.
I have always preferred an interactive teaching style. At times in Mongolia I found the language barrier to be inhibiting the learning of the students. This caused me to explore different teaching methods which I otherwise would have never considered. For example ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My philosophy, and my approach as an English tutor is a holistic one. I have worked with students from the elementary level to the university level, and one thing has become evident to me, that students can and do improve academically provided they are given the appropriate support. It has been my experience that students benefit from an academic approach that incorporates self-esteem skills in conjunction with integrating academic tools for success. It is my belief that once students are able to begin expressing ideas, views, content, and thoughts, reading and writing skills automatically begin to develop. I have the ability to gain students trust, which facilitates growth on both an academic and personal level. I believe a good tutor/teacher acts as a mirror for students in which he/she can see progress as a wise tutor is only a reflection of a student. My approach is to ... read more
