I was a student tutor during college. Approached by a classmate in my AC101 class, I helped her pass the course. During that time I discovered that I truly enjoyed helping, I picked up other students in Accounting and Math.
My teaching style is supportive and mentor like. I have the ability and patience to explain a process or procedure many times over. I help my students "get it" by having them do it instead of me doing it for them.

I recently graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with two bachelor's degrees. One degree is in Spanish and I consider myself completely fluent, especially having spent a semester in Costa Rica. During this time I volunteered at a school teaching students ages 5 through 18 English at different levels. My other degree is in Social Thought and Political Economy which required a lot of writing, generally 15 to 25 page papers per class. It is a major dedicated to social change and I learned subjects in all areas including History, Current Affairs, Politics and Political Science.
I have been a gymnastics instructor for about eight years which has helped in shaping my teaching style. I love to push children in a supportive manner so that they can believe in themselves and truly get the most of their education. As an early childhood teacher, I have had several opportunities to help children (school age), to do homework. I also was a tutor in high school to a boy for just Algebra, which then turned around to being all of his subjects and helping him keep on track. The hardest thing for me was that he had only lived in the U.S. for four years, and had trouble speaking English. After each session of tutoring, I would grab the Scrabble board, which encouraged him to use more words, learn new words, and have fun while doing so.
I like to get to the point of certain problems, such as reading the child/student when I see them, ask them some questions about the subjects they need help in and why they need help. I have worked with Infants-School age for over 5 years, and enjoy being there to help someone in need. I believe in giving back, because so many of us are blessed already.

I have a passion for knowledge, and have tutored high school and college students in the area of History, reading, and writing composition. I love teaching, and watching the student progress and excel!
My teaching style is more along the lines of the Montessori system. Given the freedom and much direction from the tutor, the student will often "discover" the essence of the lesson. In discovering the essence of the lesson, the student will take ownership. In taking ownership, the student in turn will develop pride, self worth, and a thirst for more knowledge and more successes.

It has been my experience that most students appreciate an opportunity to sit quietly and think carefully over a problem. Time for a short burst of creative and intense scrutiny is a rare luxury for most of my highly-stimulated students. My philosophy is that learning is a student's job and they should give that job the attention it deserves. I encourage my students to explore while learning but believe in providing a structure and models in which to do so. I am firm in my expectations of my students and insist that they work just as hard as I do myself.
With over 18 years of experience in Education I am capable of teaching to a variety of students and learning styles. My particular areas of expertise are composition, grammar, English literature (Shakespeare specialization), Latin, and American history. I am a working editor and writer and believe that the ability to communicate c ... read more
