During my freshman and sophomore year at Augusta State University, I tutored children at the Kid's Restart Center. The center is designed to assist foster children in their school studies. I specialize in elementary school children who are struggling with learning mathematics and reading. I believe that instructional strategies should be varied and flexible. Students are unique and their learning styles are different. Teachers need to have varied instructional strategies to try and meet the needs of the diversity of their students. I believe that knowledge of subject matter is extremely important, but not the sole component in instruction. In Mathematics, teachers need to have an understanding of mathematics as well as methods for transferring this knowledge to students. A Language Arts teacher may be knowledgeable about reading and writing, but has to find creative, interesting methods and activities to make students want to learn.
