A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in talking through problems using visual ideas and simplified concepts. I prefer teaching with graphics and concepts, and then relating them to formulas and equations. While I expect hard work from my students, I also have the patience to help them understand at their own pace.
I am a currently a working civil engineer specializing in bridge design (steel and concrete structures). I received scores of 760 in Math on both the SAT I and II, and a score of 800 in Math on the GRE's. I have taken several high level calculus, engineering mathematics, and statistics classes at the University of Delaware, aside from receiving a 5 on both the Calculus and the Statistics AP Exams. My style is to focus on the reason for a reaction so you can extrapolate what will happen with materials your have not seen before. This was the technique used when I took graduate level organic courses at Maryland.
While an undergraduate at Maryland I tutored students and helped my friends in chemistry and math. When I went to Graduate School I taught lab and two discussion sections, making sure the students understood the lecture material from the Professor. I have knowledge in general chemistry as well as extensive knowledge of Organic Chemistry. I tutored my daughter by helping her understand the underlying reasons for a reaction vs. just memorizing a huge list of organic reactions.

I enjoy working with students in small groups, or one-on-one, I believe that in order to help a student succeed in a subject matter in is first necessary to show him/her a real life application of the skill set you are teaching. If you are teaching successive addition or subtractions, the use of a checkbook, and mock purchases, will allow the student to see the value of learning the skill as opposed to simply thinking of it as one more "rote task" she/he must learn to get a passing grade.
