My fluency comes from real-world interactions as well as attending a German high school. I taught courses at the University of Richmond for students of German wishing to practice their language skills, yet whose competency may not have been to the standard for a traditional literature class. I approach teaching first as a learner; I learn what the student's main concerns are and what goals they have for themselves. Second, I teach and leave room for questions, concerns and confusion. This approach to teaching focuses on the major concerns of the student (or parent)rather than focus on an overarching theme like how to read or how to write. If the student's only concern is how to use a comma, then that will be the focus of the lesson rather than focusing entirely on all grammar.
