A Little Bit About Me...

I worked at Moorpark College as an ESL and Writing Tutor, helping students discover ways to identify and clarify ideas, refine a topic, outline ideas, and develop the skills needed to work independently. I have my BA from Scripps College in both English and History. I have significant experience tutoring within the humanities, but also German, math and the sciences. I started college as a Biology major, so I have a firm grounding in mathematics and the sciences, which I have bolstered to prepare for graduate school in Architecture. I was a Jumpstart (AmeriCorps) team leader, which involved implementing early childhood curriculum and promoting skill building for at-risk preschool children.
I have helped children prepare for preschool through games and activities, and community college students brainstorm ideas for transfer essays. I am very organized, responsible and trustworthy. I ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to patiently impart my knowledge with curious students one-on-one or in a group. I encourage individuals to do their best and show each person how to take personal interest in his or her work, particularly writing. I start with fundamentals and demonstrate how to expand their pieces of writing from sentence to paragraph to essay.
As an educator with a BA in English and an MA in Education, I have dedicated my life to teaching. I have a passion for all types of literature and writing. As a result, I have taught high school English for 12 years and expository writing at the University of New Mexico in the evening for nine years. During that time, I earned an administrative license qualifying me to be a principal. Instead of immediately becoming an administrator, I moved to Alaska with my husband for several years and explored the wild outdoors. I have moved back to the lower 4 ... read more

I enjoy sharing knowledge of science with people of all ages. Many people find science to be intimidating, but I believe that once a person gets past the vocabulary barrier, the concepts of science are less overwhelming. One of my strengths is distilling scientific knowledge from the incomprehensible to concepts that anyone can understand. Most people struggle with science by trying to memorize a bunch of facts without understanding what they mean. I approach science in a concept-driven method, and the details tend to follow naturally.
I have a PhD in Microbiology and dual majored in college to obtain a BS in both Biomedical Science and Health Chemistry. As a result, I have a wealth of knowledge in the areas of science and mathematics. I also have extensive experience writing and editing grant proposals and research papers and understand well the mechanics of the English language. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Three teachers impacted my life not only as a result of the content of their classes but in their delivery. All three approached learning as an adventure. Even though the topics ranged from sixth grade mathematics to fluid dynamics each teacher keyed their presentation on the reception of the students. If the first presentation didn’t get the topic across an alternative presentation was made, often in a humorous vein. Students were never allowed to feel inadequate. Many of the students I trained were sent by their employers. So often, the student’s frame of mind wasn’t the most open to the learning experience. By presenting the content in a light-hearted manner, the stress levels were reduced considerably! Hence, we were able to more effectively deliver the desired knowledge with greater retention. Consequently, I prefer a teaching style that puts the student at ease while we ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching experience has been diverse. I have taught fifth grade through college level, and I have taught in different areas of English: grammar, writing, literature, speech, reading, etc. I have tutored elementary students in reading and writing. I currently teach composition at the community college level to mainly non-traditional students.
With so many years of experience, I have watched educational trends come and go and come back again! My own style is simple and has served me well with all levels: discover the student's passion and build on it through reading, writing, research, and talking to him/her. I have never worked with a student who doesn't want to learn. Resistance is usually fear of failure. I love the challenge of figuring out how each student learns.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have realized that the best test of whether you understand something is to be able to teach it successfully to another person. Though being prepared is not a direct part of the tutor-student interaction, it is absolutely necessary for the tutor to be prepared far beyond the basic level. My teaching style tends to rely heavily on humor and I really try to build a relationship with students that is fun for both parties. Particularly in a tutoring capacity, where interaction is one-on-one, I believe a fun working relationship between tutor and student is imporant. I also tend to be very patient in my explainations and try to creatively explain concepts in different ways to match different learning styles.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a substitute teacher, I try to engage the interest of all the students by greeting them by name initially as I welcome them to their classroom. Easing the tension when someone messes up by asmitting that everyone blows it at some point is always a hit. It is understood by all that the day will be different than when their teacher is in the classroom, but that we'll get through together. So, we move through the day making the most of every activity.
As a Michigan resident, I was unable to find sny substantial work in the fiels of Social Work once I earned my BA degree. So, I worked in 3-4 school districts over a two year period before gaining full time work with the State. Eventually, in 2006 I lost my position with the state and again returned to substitute teaching. I enjoy young poeple and giving them a strong dose of encouragement even in brief one-day encounters. I have recently retired from the U.S. Army as a medic. During my service, I was frequently responsible for both formal and informal teaching and training. I learned to easily adapt to various learning styles, learning barriers, and researching subjects. While still in the service, I utilized my lunch breaks and evenings to further my education and emerged with my AA and completed Nurse Assistant training while still serving and my BS only one year later; two months after retiring. Currently, I am working on my MS in Health Promotion with a certificate in Disaster in Public Health. I am capable of producing ... read more

I am patient, kind, respectful, and good-humored. I have noted that my own excitement in learning is contagious. I believe each of us excels in individual areas of particular interest. I support self-esteem, self-respect, and respect for others, and I think these qualities and values are self-motivating. I learn, as well, from those whom I teach.
Most of my career experience has been in News-Editorial and creative writing. My substitute teaching experience primarily has been in the subjects of English, social studies, music, math, and art.

I believe that challenge is the key to academic success. Every student can learn and acheive, but each child needs to be motivated differently. I relish the challenge of helping my students tap into their hidden intellectual resources. I love watching students get lost in a piece of literature or find themselves through the process of writing. I believe that editing, rewriting, and re-reading are key to success in the content areas of English, literature, and reading, and I pride myself on making these seemingly arduous tasks both fun and rewarding. Overall, I hope to leave a positive mark on all of my students' lives.

More About This Tutor...

As educators, teachers and tutors play a vital role in the lives of children. I consider this to be a great responsibility and a great reward. We are responsible to see that every child in our reach feels safe, valued, and capable. We receive great reward in watching the light of learning beam in a student's eyes, possibly for the first time. I will encourage and guide all my students to reach their maximum potential. I hope to provide students with the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the challenges of their future. I believe this brief quote puts everything we do as tutors, teachers, and educators into perspective: "In 100 years from now, it will not matter what type of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, or how much money I had in the bank...but that I was important in the life of a child."
