Three teachers impacted my life not only as a result of the content of their classes but in their delivery. All three approached learning as an adventure. Even though the topics ranged from sixth grade mathematics to fluid dynamics each teacher keyed their presentation on the reception of the students. If the first presentation didn’t get the topic across an alternative presentation was made, often in a humorous vein. Students were never allowed to feel inadequate. Many of the students I trained were sent by their employers. So often, the student’s frame of mind wasn’t the most open to the learning experience. My teaching experience has been diverse. I have taught fifth grade through college level, and I have taught in different areas of English: grammar, writing, literature, speech, reading,etc. I have tutored elementary students in reading and writing. I currently teach composition at the community college level to mainly non-traditional students.

I have realized that the best test of whether you understand something is to be able to teach it successfully to another person. Though being prepared is not a direct part of the tutor-student interaction, it is absolutely necessary for the tutor to be prepared far beyond the basic level.
