My comments on tutoring English ESOL : Working on a MA in Applied Linguistics with an ESOL concentration

Aside from my degrees, I tutored fellow students (and even professors) in either Spanish or German throughout 2006-2010. I studied abroad in Costa Rica and Germany and lived in Spain for a year teaching English. I have extensive knowledge of both Latin American and Peninsular Spanish and my German is mostly Northern. I began learning Spanish in 2002 and German in 2004.

My teaching style is best described as modern Socratic method. Questioning to elicit critical thinking is the essence of education. Many of my students have thanked me in later years for teaching the principles of clarity, simplicity, brevity and humanity in writing, as those principles haave led to job promotions and advanced degrees.

A Little Bit About Me...

A year ago, I had the honor of substituting as an Assistant Teacher with an amazing kindergarten teacher. I learned then that she maintains her respect and passion for her career by following this mantra: "I need to understand my students come to me in the morning having already experienced some kind of morning of their own at home. I don’t know what that morning was like, but I can tell when it’s been a bad one. I have to be able to engage each of them, no matter what their morning was, and welcome them to the safety of my classroom. My teaching style initally involves getting to the know the person, what they are struggling with, why they think they may need a tutor, and anything they have tried in the past and what has and has not worked for them. I like to encorporate all aspects to assist with learning (visual aids, listening, and hands-on/practical). This may involve games, cartoons/movies (if tutoring Spanish), worksheeets. I also feel that goal-setting is important, and I think I would ask the tutee to set some individual/personal goals for themself, (i.e. amount of time studying or achieving certain fluency level).
I recently earned my M.A. in Counseling. I have extensive experience in working with individuals (children, adolescents, adults), from diverse backgrounds. I worked for 2 years as a High School Spanish teacher, as well as tutoring throughout college for the Foreign Language Department. I love teaching, and would be excited to help students with Spanish, History, Geometry, or Writing and Research Skills.
