I Help Students Tackle Math With Confidence!

I have enjoyed the personal gratification of tutoring since high school. Since I was 15 years old, I have shared my knowledge and love of mathematics with people of all ages. I attended Spelman College and Georgia Institute of Technology, where I received my Bachelor of Science in both Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. I also tutored my peers at these institutions. My goal is to help students understand the foundation and theory behind math concepts, so that they can tackle any math problem with ease and confidence. Confidence is key!
I bring both personality and creativity to math sessions, and I am concerned with the intellectual and emotional well-being of all tutees/students. I currently have a long list of clients that I serve through one-on-one, in-home tutoring--and have both a high success rate and client loyalty with them.

I believe that many students do not know how to study, and are unsure of where to begin. This is especially true for students entering college, or high school, who never really had to study before. As a tutor, it is my job to help the student break down the material into manageable parts and teach them to identify what is important, and how to get organized. The role of a tutor is to not give you the answers, but to help you get the answers on your own. I can show you how to problem solve, and help with test stress. I am available most evenings, and anytime on the weekends. I am also a member of the International Tutoring Association, and feel free to view my profile on LinkedIn at: http://www.linkedin.com/in/margaretholda

My teaching style has defiantly evolved over the years working with a wide variety of students and learning styles. I have learned that each student is unique, and should not be underestimated simply because of a diagnosis or so called disability. I do my best to approach each student s learning style with an open mind and a wide range of possible strategies and tools. My goal as an educator is to ensure that a student reaches her or his potential and beyond. I strive to never underestimate a student or to stagger their intellectual growth by underestimating their potential.
In 2007 I had the wonderful opportunity of being one of two teachers at the Ann Arbor Academy's lower school for students with learning disabilities. I have worked as a Teacher's Assistant for three years where I did extensive tutoring with one student over the course of the year. I substitute taught for two ye ... read more

Whenever I begin working with a student, I assess their skills and identify the areas of concern. Are they lacking the prerequisite skills for a class they are struggling with? Are they struggling because they need more repetition and review, or because they lack organizational skills? Identifying the area of weakness makes it possible for me to individualize my tutoring to meet a student’s learning styles and needs. My goal in tutoring is not only to target the areas of weakness to allow a student to succeed, but also to help them become more aware of their areas of weakness and strengths. Tutoring should not only help students master the material in their current classes, but also help students develop effective study strategies and problem solving skills that will allow them to complete their work independently, when their tutor isn't there and succeed in both current and future c ... read more

Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I know that much of my success has been a result of learning from great dynamic teachers who really cared about me as a student and as a person. I believe that teaching is done best by adapting to the student, finding common ground, and then relating that connection to the topic in question. I would love to help your student find these connections and learn to be enjoy the process of education and achievement.

Patience and flexibility are the keys. You can't explain a concept the same way to each student and expect each one will understand. Some students need extra time to grasp the material so it's important not to progress unless there's certainty of complete comprhension. Encouragement is also necessary which will build their confidence, and a confident student is a better one.
My BS in Civil Engineering provided me with an extensive education of advanced Mathematics such as Calculus, Dynamics, Physics, and Statics. I worked for 10 years in the field which included design of subdivisions, site condominiums, and other developments. Correspondence between review engineers on projects required proper writing and grammatical skills. Since October of 2009,I have worked part-time for a Metro Detroit tutoring agency. Subjects include Math, Science, English, and ACT test preparation.

To learn math is to do math. In order to do math or chemistry one must know how to read the subject material. I specifically teach students to read the text allowing them the tools to be able to teach themselves. After the student reads each section (before our session) and takes notes he/she and I will then cover all of the material together and I will address any questions the student might have. I teach with real world applications, modeling, and modified teaching based on the needs of each student. Because I enjoy the lifestyle of a teacher so much I have even taken up coaching football, wrestling, and basketball to teach leadership and sportsmanship.
I earned a BA in math and chemistry secondary education from Olivet College, a liberal arts college in Olivet, MI. There I earned enough credits to fill the requirements for a math major and four minors including organic, ph ... read more

I believe in hands on. Going over with the student. Giving them homework assignments. Showing them examples. Letting them ask as many questions as need. Repetition is what helps a student remember subjuects.
I would help students with elementary, middle, and some high school math. When I was a teenager I tutored basic math. I would help this particular student with multiplication charts, so I made a multiplication chart for them and had them go over it until they knew it like they knew their name. To help reinforce it I would give them homework problems Monday thru Thursday and a test on Friday. This was during the summer. I just finished grading papers for the meap test for Florida with Pearson.
