I have been working as a tutor at the college level throughout my college experience. I worked both for the local community college and for my self as a private tutor. I earned two bachelor degrees, a BS in chemistry with an emphasis in physical chemistry, and a BS in math with an emphasis in applied mathematics. I like to use visual learning methods as well as memorization and recognition methods. Seeing a diagram is sometimes not enough. Actually trying to simulate a diagram/problem on your own after seeing it once promotes better understanding. As pertaining to math, depending on the level of the learner, I would do some problems together first and then let them work through it and find out where they run into problems. After graduating from the University of Oregon with a BS in Basic Mathematics and Integrated Science, I volunteered for the Peace Corps and found myself teaching math and science in a village school in The Gambia, West Africa. Upon my return from the Peace Corps I landed a teaching job at a Eugene Middle School and have taught 7th and 8th grade mathematics and science for the past 20 years there. I love working with children. I have helped with pre-K and grade school children with an emphasis on working with Autistic children. All children can succeed in school given the right tools; just because they do not get the idea from one method does not mean that they won't get it from a different method. I think that all children can learn regardless of age, learning ability or other status, if given a chance. I spent two years teaching and tutoring Autistic children.
