My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : Before becoming a Certified Public Librarian, I greatly enjoyed working with children of all ages with different abilities in several acclaimed summer recreation camps and art class settings. More recently, I have worked with ADD/ADHD children who need assistance in reading, support in concentration, and coordination in reaching goals.

Patient and kind...I like to set specific goals but always encourage creative and imaginative ideas and ways of expression. I can be firm when needed but also like to bring a sense of humor into play, so to speak.
After six years of social work experience as a caseworker for Westchester County Department of Social Services where I worked extensively with families and children with special needs, I returned to college to receive my Master's degree in Library and Information Science. In 1978 I started my librarian career at the New York State Library, as a reference librarian specializing in the humanities, social sciences and legal research. I soon became coordinator of staff training (for a staff of over 200), both organizing and teaching classes in many subjects, and was liason with the New York State Data Center and Census Bureau. My interest and love of teaching and working with ... read more

My love for teaching and working with children has allowed me to learn a variety of ways to help my students learn. Through the use of audio, visual and tactile manipulatives, my students have had some very exciting experiences and have succeeded in meeting the objectives set for them. I do believe in setting high expectations for each child and my experience has shown me that they rise to the occasion. My decision to become a pedagogue was due to the fact that I had wonderful teachers in my life who were supportive, kind and thoughtful. They inspired me to want to learn more and want to give more. I strive to make a difference in the life of my students also.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked with Middle School age youth for almost a decade. I am Site Coordinator at an after school program & run a science focused club there. I also occasionally help the students who have been removed from our Homework Room with a number of subjects. I enjoy imparting my knowledge to my students via a variety of hands on learning activities and have always been a keen math, science and language arts student myself. Throughout school, I also played every woodwind instrument except the Oboe. While in college, I took every Agricultural Education class offered, as it is my intended area of post graduate study, and gained a grasp of educational psychology, classroom management and lesson planning.

I have completed student teaching experiences working with children at the elementary and junior high school levels. I worked specifically with elementary students in the areas of reading and writing in a resource setting. I also have work experience providing educational experiences for younger preschool aged children, as well. My bachelors and masters degrees have prepared me to work with students at all levels, particularly with special needs, and I believe these experiences have made me well prepared to help educate others with special needs or in the general education population, particularly in the areas of reading and writing.

I enjoy demonstrating skills and processes and then as a coach/guide in helping students develop and apply these skills and knowledge. I show the students how to properly do a task or work through a problem and then I'll help them master the task or problem solution. It's important that the students can independently solve similar problems by using and adapting demonstrated methods. I encourage student participation. As we work together I’ll learn what best works for them and adjust to their personal learning styles.

I try to highlight a students strengths and build solid study habits and work patterns. For instance, if a student has trouble focusing on his/her work, I try to push them for short periods of intense study, and then reward them with a break. Since my first degree was completed through an integrated, online program, I stress organizational skills. If I feel that a student is having an issue with organization, I explain to them how much it helps me to organize and then we address the issues they might be having.
Currently pursuing my second Bachelor's degree, I have been exposed to a wide variety of curriculum. I excel in teaching the required level of High School and College level mathematics and also have an aptitude for academic, technical, and narrative writing. I have tutored for the past year at the Center for Academic Support and Excellence at SUNY Cobleskill. We provide ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am finishing up my Bachelors degree in Dietetics at SUNY Oneonta- I will be graduated in December. I have been offered positions as a chemistry tutor but denied because of my other jobs. I was a student mentor for a year in high school to students that were "slacking" or wasn't understanding one or more of their classes. I worked at Albany ARC and worked to train young adults and adults in the kitchen- which also included basic skills such as counting and reading.
I really would like to help make a difference in someone's life and help them understand academics just like myself. When I try to teach someone, I always explain to them the subject as basic and simple as possible. I give a few examples, and then help them figure it out themselves. When/ if they struggle, I will be there to help set them back on track.
