Testing Skills is one of my top subjects! I don't approve of "teaching to the test" but there is a definite method to being a successful test taker. Wheter it's weekly spelling, multiplication tables, states and their capitals, or the dreaded end-of-grade or end-of-course, I can coach you on strategies that are proven to help you perform better.

As mentioned in my earlier description, I have eighteen years experience as an educator. I have taught students of all ages from early childhood through college and non-traditional adult education. I believe in making learning fun and engaging by relating concepts to points of interest for the individual student.
Tutoring differs from teaching in that "style" is replaced by method. Some of the methods I have used in the past are rhythm and music, neumonic devices, and of course, drill and practice. I have been told that I am gifted with presenting material in novel ways.

A Little Bit About Me...

I find that teachers are most effective when they get to know the children. What interests/motivates them. Using that information I create lessons that are specifically suited for them. By using a variety of resources I help students maximize their potential by realizing that learning can be fun.
After receiving my teaching degree in May 2004 I was a substitute teacher in Washington State for 6 months. Then I spent the next 27 (Jan. 2005- Apr. 2007)months working as a Teacher Collaborator in the United States Peace Corps. Upon successful completion of the Peace Corps I moved to London, England and taught 6th grade from 2007-2010. During that time I did 1-1 tutoring with 10 children for a total of 100 hours. Tutoring was primarily in Math.

A Little Bit About Me...

My educational background (I’m an Ivy League grad), high levels of achievement, work experience, mentoring and teaching activities gave me the skills to be an effective tutor. As a senior employee, I mentored new employees. As a graduate teaching assistant, I worked with college students in helping them understand complex subjects. At my daughter’s elementary school, I worked with students on improving their reading skills. My strongest skill set is in English comprehension, composition, grammar, punctuation and spelling. I can also tutor in basic math, social studies and biology. I have related skills in study tactics, test preparedness, research strategies, and using the computer.
For me, there's nothing better than seeing that light of understanding and excitement come over someone's face when they solve a problem (like math) or suddenly comprehend a subject they were having tro ... read more

I received a dual certification in middle school mathematics and science in 2006. I have taught for the past four years as a certified teacher in the state of North Carolina in the Clinton City and New Hanover school districts. Currently I am pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching and my expected date of completion is August 2010.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a results-oriented teacher, I am committed to helping students succeed in all academic areas. I am personable and patient, and enjoy working with both students and parents in order to teach to the strengths and interests of each student. I especially enjoy teaching reading comprehension, writing, and English grammar. As an after-school tutor, I help students prepare for standardized testing by teaching test taking strategies. Additionally, I plan and teach lessons on-line that are viewed by children in other countries learning English. One of my special talents is working one-on-one with students who have learning differences.
My job is to encourage students by providing a positive role model and love of learning. Students are asked to use higher order thinking skills; getting them to dig deeper and ask questions engages their minds and I see them become more excited about le ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I began my tutoring experience as a high school senior under the supervision of school's principal. This experience was primarily to help students with English composition and spoken language issues, and to provide remedial assistance to students with learning disabilities. My dedication to my studies and volunteer efforts earned me the school's Valedictorianship, and led me to pursue multiple subjects in college. I continued my training in language, writing, research, and social studies and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in History with a minor in Sociology. I have spent several years working in the Information Technology field, functioning as a contact for business clients, and devoting my free time to a plethora of studies.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love making learning fun and rewarding for students. My forte is in breaking down math and science concepts to basic understandable chunks, relating new information to prior knowledge, and teaching learning and test taking skills that can be applied to any subject. I believe students learn best when they see the relevance of what they are learning in their own lives, so I strive to provide real life examples and experiences to help students see "why they have to learn this." Experience has taught me that no two students learn the same way. Therefore, my strategies incorporate approaches that appeal to multiple intelligences.
As a North Carolina Teaching Fellow, I tutored elementary through high school students in reading and math as I went through college. I have been teaching 7th grade math and science for the past eight years. The seventh grade curriculum has allowed me to ... read more

More About This Tutor...

Being a mother of teenagers gives me an edge as a teacher. I have tremendous patience and understanding of the daily lives of young people. I try to make my students feel comfortable and safe in my classroom, if a student does not feel comfortable, they will find it hard to open up to a learning environment. My philosophy is learning does not have to be painful.
As a mother of three teenagers, i decided to go back to school and fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a high school English teacher. I could not imagine myself doing anything but helping young minds grow to their fullest potential. I am highly qualified in the area of writing. My 10th grade students have an 85% proficiency rating for the NC writing assessment. I also teach Graduation Project that requires an 8-10 page documented research paper. My skills in these areas will prove highly useful in a tutoring capacity.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am graduating from the University of NC Wilmington with a BS in Chemistry and minor in mathematics in May of 2010. I was very much driven to achieve a high level of excellence in education, since i came from a third world country where education is not available. so my experience and bachelor degree enable me to gain the understanding in many areas of math and science.
Coming to this country and be able to go to school is very important for me, and i found it very difficult seeing many children not able to go to school because they have not motivation, even if they have the opportunity to go to school and be what they want.I believe education is very import in the 21st century and everybody should go to school and learning new experience and explore the different opportunity available for them, so i would like to help students learn about the value of education and help them gain ... read more
