A Little Bit About Me...

I have a degree in English Literature and graduated with a 3.66 GPA in 2012. I have written hundreds of college level essay and research papers. I have a Master's Degree in Creative Writing and I am currently attending Southern New Hampshire University to obtain a Master's Degree in Education. I work as an educator and specialize in Language Arts.
I believe strongly in adapting to the students style of learning. There is no "one size fits all" in learning. I think it is important to go beyond teaching the facts by exploring the bigger picture. Development of critical thinking skills should go hand in hand with teaching the test materials.

Tutoring for: Writing, Reading, PSAT/SAT, ACT, GRE

I consider myself a very laid back person and am flexible in terms of addressing the student's concerns. I primarily work in subjects related to writing. My training is in philosophy, so I tend to focus on helping students develop strong reasoning/arguing skills and a precise voice. I find that these skills, which are heavily emphasized in philosophical writing, carry over well into all forms of academic writing.
I have worked at the Salem State University writing center for the last two years. At the writing center, I work with students on papers in all subjects, from math to English. My experience at the center has helped me develop methods for helping students plan and organize papers, and also for addressing grammar and style issues. I also have a lot of experience working with ESL students.

My skills, which I learned in the Education Bachelor's degree program at the University of Connecticut, emphasize the development of critical thinking and clear expression in student work. My experience includes working with struggling students in every area, from Advanced Placement to non-traditional learners, so I incorporate many different methologies to help students succeed. As an expert in research skills myself, I can also provide research guidance to students. But my most consistent skill is my ability to help every student find their voice and access their ideas.
I have been helping students improve their skills since 1989, and there is nothing that thrills me more than a student's "aha!" moment, when everything they are trying to learn just clicks for them. For the past several years I have taught introductory critical thinking and basic essay-writing; students come to ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a firm believer of repetition. I have many books on grammar, linguistics, writing styles and nonfiction/fiction how to. I accompany any lesson with many resources. My goal is to instill the importance of good sentence structure and language because it is used at every facet of the work place. My mother has been a special education teacher for over 25 years, when i was younger and a paraprofessional substitute teacher, i realized that in some way i would like to help the developmentally disabled, especially with my love of reading and writing.
As a creative writing major at school, i was an avid member of our newspaper, serving as copy editor. When i graduated college i continued my summer job as a technical writer at an engineering company. My last position was also an assistant technical writer. Both positions required knowledge of AP style, extreme detail to grammar and an a ... read more

My teaching style is entirely individualized to meet the needs of the child. As a special educator, my instruction has most often been diagnostic, targeted to meet specific goals and objectives. I relate activities to real life, so that lessons are interesting and students can apply and generalize learned skills. I use a multisensory approach. My lessons often include a combination of visuals, formula guides, manipulatives and other materials carefully selected to support and engage the individual student.
As a fourth year special education teacher, I have an extensive repertoire of strategies to help students learn. Having worked with both disabled and nondisabled children, primarily in small group and 1:1 settings, I have developed an acute sense of each of my students' learning styles, strengths and needs. I have been involved with education for seven years now. I started by working as a paraprofessional in the special education program at Oyster River High School. This job was essentially daily tutoring of students within the school setting. In addition to this valuable experience I recently recieved my Masters Degree in Secondary English Teaching from the University of New Hampshire (in fact, Graduation was two days ago). The final step in reaching that goal was my year long internship, during which I taught a freshman English class and a Journalism 1 class, as well as helping to co-teach several other classes. Although my expertise is in the realm of English, I have tutored students in Math as high as geometry, and in Physical Science and Biology, as well as History, World Cultures, and Civics.

The temptation as instructor is to simply restructure the way in which a student learns in order to fit your view, and those I have helped encourage such behavior. Guidance, suggestions, and allusions as to how a student can improve and understand is a better alternative. Simply doing the work for the student has little value in regards to education. A fine balance must be struck between open ended comments of little use and high jacking creativity through re-working large portions of work. My policy is to make the student aware of their shortcomings, explain my reasoning, and use enigmatic reserve in telling them how to correct errors. Unless the mistake is simple, I hold back on literally telling them what to do. .
As an undergraduate, my focus for studies in English were both Critical Literary Analysis and Creative Writing. Analytical writing was stressed heavily, giving me ... read more
