PhD Educated RN - Nursing, Science, Research Expertise

Teaching became a passion for me while completing my PhD. I have worked as a Teaching Assistant in undergraduate clinical nursing classes and have taught research classes at the Graduate level. As a Nurse Educator, I have received multiple teaching awards including Teacher of the Year for the Northeastern United States.
My tutoring philosophy focuses on identifying your strongest areas in a subject and building upon your strengths until you are confident in your ability to achieve your goals. During our initial meeting, we will discuss and create an action plan to ensure your academic goals are achieved. Tutoring sessions can focus on preparing for a test, tutoring throughout a course, or tutoring sessions that focus on developing strategies for a research paper, Capstone paper, and Senior/Graduate Thesis.

Teaching is the most fulfilling experience I have ever had. I am a person who learns by doing, and it has been my experience that actively working with the material alongside the student (rather than lecturing) is the most effective approach to imparting information. I believe that if a person is given the tools and is actively guided along the learning path, anyone can achieve academic success. More than that, it's likely a student will feel that spark of curiosity that drives them to learn through discovery even on their own time. My goal is to open the door to learning by establishing a foundation of understanding of the subject I'm teaching, and encourage the student on his or her own journey down the learning path.
As an undergraduate, a professor in the Psychology department recruited me to be a teaching assistant in Statistics after she found me freely tutoring my classmates ... read more

During the last 10 years, I have been a Peer Tutor to University students, a Literacy Tutor with the Literacy Volunteers of America, and an individual tutor to local children. I have extensive experience with all types of writing skills: from poem writing, to letter writing, to business writing. My most recent work experience afforded me the opportunity to perfect my business correspondence. Additionally, I earned a perfect score on the written portion of the GMAT exam (business school entrance exam). I completed my MBA in Finance and Management at New York University. I wrote many business essays.
I love to share my knowledge and share my skills with others in a way to help them learn and grow. The way that I do this is by: 1) evaluate the child's skills, 2) acknowledge the child's skills and build his/her confidence as a stepping stone for future learning, 3) work to add to the ... read more

I have taught a few weapons classes and use of force classes as a security forces member in the Air Force. However, I have never taught classes on a regular basis.
As a supervisor and trainer in the military, it was my responsibility to train the new individuals that came into the job. There was a lot of studying material that I constantly had to sit down and go over with them. We made flashcards, took notes, made up quizzes, did verbal question and answers, etc. I actually used to tutor math in High School when I was in an advanced Calculus class and have helped many friends with their college math. As a grad student, I am writing lots of essays which has really helped me with my English skills. I have a lot of academic experience that I would love to utilize while tutoring.

Education is a large part of who I am. I have earned two Bachelor degrees, BS in Human Development and Family Studies as well as a BA in Sociology. I initially worked in the field of social work upon graduation which gave me great insight into family life, sociological influences, and the impact of socio-economic factors on education. I feel I am better prepared to deal with the differences and challenges of special education students due to these experiences. During the last four years I have worked as a paraprofessional in special education, tutoring students in subject areas, electives, and as a Job Coach in the community.
My love for learning drives me to do all that I can to make learning fun and motivating for others. I employ Gardner's eight multiple intelligences into my teaching so that material is presented in various ways. This allows students with different learni ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Although I had a family and worked full time I decided to go back to school and get my advanced degree from Johns Hopkins University. It was a great school and I felt a wonderful sense of accomplishment by obtaining my degree. While obtaining a BA degree from Johns Hopkins University, I was inducted into the honor society Alpha Sigma Lambda, and president from 2000-2002. During that time I tutored adults with problems in basic math skills, reading and writing. Although I did not obtain a teaching certificate - I began my master's degree in Education from Johns Hopkins University in Adult Learning. I moved out of the area before I could finish the degree. I have learned extensive skills from the graduate courses and also from the student teaching that was required during those years.
I have always enjoyed tutoring students. I would like to be able to give something bac ... read more

During high school, a manager at work asked if I would help tutor his Hispanic children. The tutoring lasted for about a year and we were all satisfied with the results. After graduating from Rutgers in 2006 with a BA in Psychology, I found a job as a residential counselor for the Devereux Foundation. Math and writing were top priorities and daily notes were taken to see how well each client progressed each week. I now work with a population of students who have developmental disabilities, such as autism. We focus our time on math, grammar, science, the arts, and social skills as well. Also, I have an extensive background in writing and researching due to my undergraduate and graduate work (MS completion).
I believe in education and feel that everyone has the right to a solid foundation in learning to begin or expand their lives. Most of my experience comes with children, but I hav ... read more

As an undergraduate at UConn, I pursued a number of fields from computer science to communications and philosophy, giving me a wide range of experience in a multitude of subject areas. In my senior year, I became a substitute teacher for grades 7-12 in all subjects. I am currently a graduate student in criminal justice, writing papers and doing research almost continuously.
As an active member of Mensa International and someone who's consistently done well in number-related fields, I've come to love teaching what I can understand. I perceive the world in a very unique way and I excel at using my perspective to help my students understand what others typically have difficulty imparting to them. I aim to one day be a professor and I love to inspire learning in and out of the classroom.

While I hold high standards for academics, I am a fervent believer in learning through meaning. Every lesson plan I have taught has been designed so that it doesn't "feel" like a lesson plan, but rather, has been an experience. I believe it is essential to create a learning environment that engages the student actively, and educates them not just in the subject matter, but holistically, socially, and humanistically.
In my undergraduate studies, I focused primarily on the student's use of imagination as it relates to literacy comprehension. While I have successfully completed credits in advanced mathematics and engineering, my passion is in English. I have scored consistently in the 90th+ percentile on standardized tests in the writing portions (Including the GRE), and have done exhaustive research for a local professor in preparation for a manuscript.
