Biology near 89503!

I graduated with my BS in biology from the University of South Florida. I ranged in interest from genetics and cell biology to ecology and botany. Since graduation in 2010, I have worked with the Student Conservation Association, Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service gaining field experience around the western states. I have always had a passion for science and love sharing my knowledge with others. I think science can open peoples eyes to the wonders of the natural world and hope to help people grasp the concepts.

Life Science is one of my top subjects!

My style of tutoring is creative flexibility. I assess the student's learning style and try to adapt to that, using different senses (kinetic, aural, oral) to trigger best responses. However, this is layered over a basic multi-part structure suited to the subject. I also like to set up a schedule of what our hour will be like, with some beginning exercises (usually recall from previous session). The rest of the hour would be structured with student input as much as possible. At the end, I like to introduce some free time to talk about the lesson and about any new ideas.
I have a masters degree in Enviornmental Biology and a BA in pre-med sciences. I also have an AA degree in Dietetics. My other hat is a long career in writing, editing, and publishing. I've been tutoring since high schools in a wide range of subjects, such as latin, algebra II, and biology. The skills you use to teach yourself the material can be directly applied to someone else, especially when you find something does not click at first. I have a number of mnemonics for helping my tutees retain the material they've spent time learning. In college I don't tutor professionally because of time constraints, but I help other students understand problems they may be having difficulty with. I've also had my own SAT tutor and seen different programs and their styles, and I've chosen the one that I find the most effective.

Versatile Hands-on Tutor for all Age ranges

Throughout my academic career, I have done in-class tutoring in exchange for credit. I have also helped my family members, neighbors, and friends to study, complete homework, and even do reports. My range of subjects is very versatile, anything from Oceanography, to Intercultural Communications, to Culinary Arts, and even 3D sculpture and design. Of course outside of these elective type courses, I have a 3.7 GPA in my general education, including Math, English, Science, and Social Studies. I attended a charter high school, where we took outside the box classes that met the state regulations. I was taking botany and forensics for science, and African American and Native American history classes. This gave me and opportunity to think outside the box, and become more well rounded. I have been gifted with many brilliant teachers with many different approaches to teaching, and app ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with students. As a teacher I enjoy the learning process and love watching the students discover new concepts and ideas. As as school counsleor I assisted students in working at their emotional and challenging behaviors. In both positions I strongly believe each student has the potential to learn. I teach to the different learn styles of my students.
When I was working as a secretary I knew I wanted to further my education. I returned to school and completed my bachelor of science in education. As a classroom teacher I realized the many problems my students had to deal with. This prompted my to complete my master in school counseling. I have attended several workshops throughout my career to enchance my teaching and counseling methods with Reading, Writing and Grammar for students of any age.

More About This Tutor...

I have been working with children and adolescents in a variety of capacities for 20+ years. I truly enjoy their energy and their desire to be successful given the right encouragement and direction. For the past 4-5 years, I have been a substitute teacher and tutor for K-12, working with a culturally diverse mix, in the areas of math, English, science, health education, music, journalism, and theatre. I have received pictures, flowers and numerous other tangible "thank you's!" from parents and children and love this work!
Given the right atmosphere, I honestly believe anyone can learn. Unfortunately, many individuals are given labels, especially regarding their learning capacity, and once that belief system is in place, the expectations are often lowered and self-esteem suffers. I believe in positive encouragement and support, while working through difficulties with a 'can do' attit ... read more

I have been preparing and conducting adult coursework for a variety of computer - based applications and software for 15 or more years. The courses were done in large lecture environments (30 or more at a time) and also small or individuals sessions, and remote (phone and web-ex) deliveries. I am experienced in assessing group attitude and individual needs and am told that I am very adept at putting my "students" at ease, both through delivery style and in customizing and breaking down the materials for the particular person or group. I am a mother of 2 grown children and one young grandchild. When my children were in elementary school I volunteered at least 1/2 day each week in their classrooms - helping as needed. Sometimes that meant a little extra time with a student learning to tie his shoes, and other days reading to a circle of children.
I love helping others learn an ... read more

I believe in the Democratic approach to Educating the young. I start the year by asking the students what they would like to learn that year and we record this on a large sheet of paper. Students feel happy to know their wishes are so considered and then at the end of the year we review the list and they see that they have cov ... read more

I believe that our children hold the future of our world in their hands and hearts and for this reason I have a deep desire to assist them in learning all of their subjects as well as they can. My approach is democratic in that I ask the child for his/her input on what they like to study and learn too. Finding out a childs loves is important for a teacher. In attending the University of Nevada, Reno, I was introduced to and involved with several programs working with youth. I was a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) working with children who were removed from their home for various reasons. (Parents were usually abusive). I also tutored Autistic children in the Early Childhood Autism program at UNR for almost two years. This program has offered me unique training and qualifications for tutoring youth, not just Autistic children. I minored in Criminal Justice, and took several additional English classes outside the necessary classes required for graduation, as I find English, among other various disciplines, to be quite a strength for me.

I love teaching and believe it is my calling in life. I do believe all children can learn, but in different ways.I look forward to teaching your child in a customized manner, which best meets their needs and learning style. My goal is to help all children reach their full potential, whatever that may be. I use a variety of techniques to help children reach their goals and keep myself updated on new theories yet I also feel comfortable using many tried and true techniques as well.

A strength on which I have always prided myself is my ability to relate complex concepts with useful analogies and from different angles. I never underestimate a child's ability to learn something, so long as it's in a way in which they understand it. Curriculum development is also important. By that, I mean the creation of illustrations, tables, lists, acronyms, heuristics, and flash cards to aid a student in their thirst to learn. I am patient and fun, and working with children is something that has always animated and invigorated me. By getting a child to enjoy what he or she is learning, a tutor can open the floodgates to his or her potential and happiness.
