As part of the requirement to be a member of Pi Delta Phi, the French National Honor Society at UCF, I was required to tutor French students of all levels on a regular basis. Learning a foreign language not only taught me French, but also gave me a new understanding of English. Because of my experience in teaching my own children, I have discovered that no child is too young to learn. Often people will not consider an infant or toddler a "functioning human being" until the child can speak. This is so inaccurate! I taught one of my daughters to read at age four. My teaching style is to engage the student on a personal level through cheerful conversation and sharing of interests, then to assess learning styles, strengths, and challenges.
