A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching is an exciting profession for me. I believe all kids including the most intellectually disabled can learn. I believe in setting high but realistic goals for students. Learning starts before children enter school and should be integrated between home and school. I am a firm believer in laying strong foundations in the lower grades, and building upon this as the child develops. Teaching children through systematic and explicit instruction has worked best for the students in my classes. Teaching children basic knowledge and then applying those skills to real-world experiences is my method of choice. I am a dedicated teacher and care about my students’ progress.

First and foremost, I love working with students. I believe all students have an ability to learn once you find the way to connect with them. I think the key is in finding that particular connection because each student is gifted in his or her own special way. All people learn differently, and I approach teaching with this understanding and appreciation of the differences in all students and their backgrounds. My teaching style for Spanish is proficiency-based, culture-based and student-centered. My college students master basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar through writing grocery lists, ordering from a menu, describing how they are feeling, and even decorating skull cookies for the Day of the Dead. On a similar note, I teach children by discovering and exploring Spanish with them. Together we decorate Day of the Dead cookies, create and label picture posters, and play games in Spanish to practice vocabulary. Each activity always targets the child's strongest learning styles and their comfort zones.
