I have a passion for teaching but waited until I gained some "real world" experience. I found that this has helped me relate to my students since I am able to make meaningful connections to their learning. I like to discover what my students already know about the topic and to expose any misconceptions. Brainstorming activities work well for me. I like to help define the topic in common terms, not the classic dictionary method. I use presentation, discussion, videos and hands on activities. Most of what I do is inquiry based.

Since my graduation from Simmons College, Boston, MA in 1988, I have worked extensively in the publishing industry as a freelance writer for magazines, newspapers, and guides. Recently, I have become eligible to teach in the state of New Hampshire, and have worked as a Teacher Assistant in the Londonderry School District. I also have been tutoring students in grades 5-12 in reading, writing, and history. In addition, I have worked with younger students in mathematics. I truly love being an educator, and I hope to continue my role as a teacher. I particularly love working with learning disabled students in writing and reading. My teaching style is based on the belief that children perform well academically when given an opportunity to learn in their own unique way. I enjoy working with youth, ever since I was in college I have had jobs where I worked with children. I think their fun, and great to be around. I really enjoy helping them excel in whatever they like to do sports or academics. I very flexible in working around schedules, and I easy going and easy to get a long with. I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Physical Education, which means I took several teaching classes. I have worked with youth for almost 10 years, working in schools, summer camps, and most recently as an director of (3) afterschool programs. Ever since I was in high school, I have always enjoyed working with children in a variety of situations. I helped out in a second grade classroom and enjoyed helping students understand their classwork. Even in college, I enjoyed helping my friends with math and writing. Last year, I taught a self-contained sixth grade classroom and this year, I taught a multi-age first and second grade classroom in the same school. My creativity allows me to come up with different teaching ideas depending on the child's needs. Differentiated instruction has helped me to reach the needs of all learners and positive reinforcement has helped to motivate students to want to do well. I believe that the social aspect of a child's life is just as important as the academics. Once these needs are met, children are more apt to reach their fullest potential.
