Motivated to help struggling students find love of learning

I have over 15 semesters of college courses most in the sciences. I find math and science to come easy to me if I am taught it in the right way and I would love to share that with struggling students out there. I have had experience in big and small schools, accelerated programs as well as normal classrooms so I have been exposed to a variety of learning environments.
I love to teach and coach and think it is important to understand that everyone learns and grasps concepts in different ways. I do not have a specific teaching style other than positive because each child requires their own approach.

I believe all learners can be successful in their learning when presented with learning opportunities within their primary learning styles. I am patient and able to present information by creatively using visual, auditory, and participatory modes of learning. Differentiated instruction allows me to provide students with learning opportunities to meet their specific learning styles. When tutoring students I use questioning to determine student understanding and to allow students to discover what they already know. This method gives students confidence and an "I can" mentality.
I am a detail oriented professional driven by a strong work ethic and a process and results oriented philosophy. Using critical thinking and problem solving skills I analyze and evaluate student needs and concerns, set goals, and work collaboratively to attain student success. I don't have a style. When I left high school in rural Iowa I was told I was retarded and would never even be able to write a check. At age 38 when struggling through Iowa State my chem teacher sent me to be tested for learning disabilities and I had multiple learning disabilities but an above average IQ. I don't teach I allow the student to learn in an environment where they are listened to, talked with(not to) and treated like they have value and worth. I treat them the opposite way I was treated. And when they do well we cheer together!
I tutored for two years at the Iowa State University Tutors Office, Iowa State University, Ames, IA. I tutored anatomy, physiology, biology, zoology. I taught for one year at Graceland University, Des Moines, IA

I enjoy teaching with individuals of all ages. I believe that every person should learn something new everyday and to succeed in doing this all that is needed is a common link. My patience and determination show to my students that I am there to help them. Coupling this with a view at the big picture helps a teacher better understand which ways a student learns. Since all students do not learn in the same manner it is pertinent to establish a game plan in the first meeting and help them work through any difficulties that they may learning the subject manner. Once your teaching style is on the same page as their learning style, everything should work out in the end. Not only are you a tutor but you should also be a role model.

More About This Tutor...

By far, the biggest issue I have found with students with difficulty learning mathematics or the sciences is that there is a lack of motivation to learn, primarily because they do not understand the implications of the knowledge in front of them. Because I have studied physics, mathematics, and completed the pre-medicine curriculum at my university, I am brimming with knowledge of these applications. Once my students have gained an understand of all the cool stuff we can do with knowledge in these avenues, they tend to absorb concepts much more readily. I have also found that my general excitement for the subjects I am teaching rubs off on my pupils.
Since my sophomore year of college, I have been tutoring students in mathematics, physics, and chemistry in both college and high school. I have also since been involved with biomechanical research at Des Moines University, where I cur ... read more
