A Little Bit About Me...

I have two years tutoring experience. In college, I tutored college students who struggled with math (algebra, trigonometry, calculus, etc). Other experience I have is derived from having taken and successfully passed (A) those courses I can tutor. I also help and tutor students who would like to learn how to play piano by ear, chords (major, minor, diminished, augmented), hear a song and determine chords, accompanying a singer, etc. I have experience in playing piano by ear for churches from almost 2 years. I occasionally play piano/keyboard in a band setting.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching philosophy has developed through my experiences as a high school physics teacher, as a teaching assistant in the Department of Physics at Texas Tech University, and through tutoring individual students. In my experience, high level of student participation is important. First, it allows students to at least start thinking towards a problem in their own way, and later start debating over what they have learned in the classroom. I try to encourage the class by carefully organizing my lectures. With a clear organization, students are more likely to believe they understand the framework of the class and therefore will be willing to ask questions about the sections they may not understand. A second technique which I believe provided usefulness is carefully planned homework assignments which lean more toward conceptual understanding than filling in numbers within a formula. I graduated from Purdue University with a Civil Engineering degree in 2003. This degree required an extensive amount of Math and Science course work. I am currently employed in the consulting industry. My job requires me to do a lot of Public Education and Outreach- to make Engineering and complicated environmental issues understandable to the general public. I thouroughly enjoy this and love to make learning fun, interesting, and relatable to real world topics. I have experience tutoring for School on Wheels working with k-12 students on a variety of course work. I also tutored my little sister thorughout junior high and high school. She always tells me I was the only teacher that was patient enough to make math and science make sense to her. My teaching style is my tutoring style as I do mostly tutoring. I work with students to determine the missing math procedures or concepts. When a student misses a question, I do not simply show them the solution or correct answer. I solve the problem with the student (without looking at the answer) by discussing the approach (procedure) together. In this way, we share the approach to the solution and weak spots are revealed.
I have had a very successful career as an Engineer/Plant Manager. I changed careers and I am now Teaching/Tutoring. I teach/tutor High School math at an inter-city school (IPS). I also work for a Huntington Learning Center working with high-achieving high school students trying to improve their SAT and ACT math scores.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a teacher, I will not only be relaying important information to my students, but also helping them grow as young adults. Effective teaching can help instill a desire to learn and responsibility in the students. There are a few key components I feel are important in order to be a successful teacher. These include preparation, interactive learning, and a desire to continue growing as a teacher.I feel that I will have taught successfully when my students succeed. If they can leave the session with a greater understanding and appreciation for science, I will feel that I’ve successfully completed my role as their teacher and coach.

"Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he eats for a lifetime." This quote is the backbone of my teaching. It is what I live for each day. I think that I do a good job presenting information and ideas in multiple ways to reach learners on a variety of levels. I differentiate my instruction by coming up with activities to get students out of the typical paper-pencil work, and relate the work to real-life activities. When I do that, the students have more fun and the material is meaningful to them. Therefore, they retain the information better. I believe in giving kids structure so that they will know what I expect from them, and in turn, they will know what they can expect from me.
I have been a teacher at Mount Vernon High School for the past three years. I came here straight out of college, and have had the opportunity to bring a lot of new idea ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Hands on, real world examples are the most effective when learning mathematics. It is very important to understand the theory behind what is calculated, in order to understand what is being done. Working lot of examples, from different points of view, and finding easy ways to sanity check your answers is also important.

I am a graduate of Purdue University with a degree in Engineering. Not only have I excelled in math and science throughout the educational process, I also did very well in all other subjects, never receiving less than a 'B' letter grade in any class. More importantly, however, I enjoy passing on to others the knowledge that I have gained. In addition to tutoring other students, I have also had great success tutoring 4 of my own children in a variety of subjects.

I am a strong believer in student-directed learning. While I am happy to explain concepts and answer specific questions, many students merely ask “Can you show me how to do this?” While a demonstration is useful and necessary the first few times, I will then switch to leading questions to allow the student to recall the appropriate next steps. It is also useful to have the student explain what they DO understand about a problem to better identify what they DON’T understand and why. To add an element of variety, games like timed challenges or linking current events to math problems are relevant “distractions”.
I have always loved mathematics, but never thought I would end up being a teacher. I initially used my strong analytical skills in the business world. As I continued to work with young people through my church and professional jobs lead me to human relations positions, ... read more
