A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching for 13 years. I began teaching Social Studies classes at the high school level and taught every variety of student for 6 years. I then received my Masters in Special Education and began working with special needs students in the high school setting. While teaching Special Education students,I received my Specialists Degree in Special Education. I currently teach Social Studies to learning disabled, emotional behavior students, and Mildly Intellectually disabled students. I am also in charge of the tutoring program for the whole school in Social Studies. I have a lot of patience and am willing to try anything. I also teach 2 resource classes to the LD and EBD students where we work on their individual problems. Every student is different so I have to be a jack of all trades to work with them.

My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : I have experience working with these students. I have learned that I must keep some characteristics in mind. I must establish a rapport with the student. I must keep tutoring sessions short allowing for breaks if needed. I must avoid distractions during the sessions. I also find it helpful and amust to communicate with the teachers to know what assignments are due and when and test dates and the material to be tested on.

I truly believe all children can learn. I am very student-centered as I know that each child learns in different ways. I have a minor in Psychology which I use to help me understand the psyche of the child. Behavior is a very important aspect in learning and I employ Positive Behavioral Supports and an individual approach to every child. I am a strong believer in using real-life problems, manipulatives, and engaging activities that use all the senses.

I am a lover of learning. My love for learning has certainly attributed to my working my way through a Masters of Arts in Teaching. My enthusiasm for helping others to learn has been most heightened; however, through my experience working with students. I have worked in multiple roles at the elementary school level through collegiate level. Every position I have worked in I have loved because of the students. Each person has their own learning needs and own challenges. I love being a part of working through those challenges and finding understanding and success.
I find that teaching is as much about getting to know each person, finding there strengths and weaknesses and using those to benefit them in their process of understanding. Teaching has always been a passion of mine and I thoroughly enjoy helping students to realize their full potential. I believe that all students are capable of achieving academic success so long as the teacher provides a means through which students can make personal connections with the material. I believe providing opportunities for choice encourages exploration of academic sources in even the most hesitant of students because their unique perspectives are being met and acknowledged. As someone who graduated with an associates in a scientific field, I know how important it is to be persistant in my knowledge of mathematics and how critical it is for others to succeed knowing the same knowledge that I know about math no matter what the career field.
My teaching styles and techniques very with the student and their knowledge of the subject and learning skills. I am patient, willing to listen to the student's(s') needs, and apply those needs in any way that I am able. My goal is the success of the student be beyond the classroom and apply that success above his or her peers. I strive to make a difference.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe the teacher needs to create a safe learning environment, explore different learning styles, and always keep in mind Bloom's Taxonomy.(yes, the fundamentals are still important) I prefer to teach students the curriculum, not teach curriculum to the students. Students need a chance to discover, explore and apply prior learning principles to progress successfully to a different level of learning. And finally, the most important... LEARNING IS FUN! LET IT HAPPEN!

I am a very hands on type person and encourage students to use manipulatives, pictures, or various other visual aids that may help them further understand the concepts that are being mastered. I feel all children have the capacity to learn but it is up to us as educators to find how to help that child learn. No child is the same therefore all teaching methods cannot be the same, only similar. Using whatever type of resource available to teach a child to master a skill is a requirement for me as a teacher.
As a student at Florida State University, Panama City Campus, I have been learning how to educate and tutor children. I currently tutor two children at my local elementary school that are below level/struggling readers.I have been learning how to teach all five areas(reading, math, social studies, art, science, and language arts) that are part of a child's learning experience.
