I teach to my students so they can learn. Each of my students has a different modality of acquiring and retaining information, so I assess that style and present instruction in a way that is meaningful. My work towards a master's degree in special education highlighted the various ways in which a student gains knowledge. I use that information to engage and educate my students. I love being able to teach someone something new. I love learning, but have always been a visual learner, so whether I'm teaching someone how to read, or simply helping them improve their reading skills, I introduce visual aids. I believe in order for success a student has to understand the basics in order to solve increasingly complicated problems in school. When tutoring I make sure that when a student is solving a problem they not only understand what they are doing but why they are doing it. I feel children are very self-aware and are very vulnerable to positive and negative feedback. Therefore, no matter how little progress is made, praise them. If no progerss is made or if an issue needs to re-addressed, praise them..."That was great, but let's try it this way!"
