My comments on tutoring Genetics : Within the scope of general biology courses I have taught sections on genetics. I also have worked in genetic research labs.

The defining characteristic of my teaching method, whether in a classroom or tutoring individual students, is fostering a respectful and comfortable learning environment. I believe that the foundation for this environment is created by establishing small, personal connections with the student. I try to take every opportunity to get to know a student’s’ personal interests. This allows me to choose meaningful examples and metaphors that students will be more likely to understand and remember. It also makes study sessions engaging and conversational which always benefits learning, in my experience. Organizational skills are essential to learning and I always address this component at the start of working with a student. I have always picked things up quickly, more quickly than my peers. My peers have often come to me to ask for my help in those areas. I also see how to apply what I have learned to original problems because I see connections and hold a deeper understanding of the material. My double major in Chemistry and Biochemistry with a mino in Mathematics was full of its fair share of difficult material, and I was almost always able to help my peers, as well as younger students, through their problems.
I can usually find a way to relate the material that the student is struggling with to something else that they understand. When they can make connections to more familiar things, then they can think themselves through problems more effectively.
