A Little Bit About Me...

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology earned in 1970 at Lynchburg College and a Master of Science degree in Environmental Health from East Tennessee University earned in 1979. I have taught sixth and seventh grade math, science and physical education and high school biology (three years total). I am now teaching a general environmental science course at National College in Lynchburg, Virgina. I have worked for the Virginia Department of Air Pollution and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality for the last thirty years from inspector, permit writer and Regional Director. My expertise is in the environmental field but like to teach in the elementary or science areas.

I know that each student has an incredible amount of potential and the trick to unlocking it is not in forcing a set way of understanding ideas, but in approaching each problem from several different fronts and working towards a total understanding of one concept before moving on to the next. Secondly, laughter and enjoyment need to be part of the learning process. Concepts should be taught from the bottom up, where every new piece of information is simply an outgrowth of existing knowledge, rather than something new that needs digesting.
Through earning my degree in biomedical science, I have accrued a significant amount of experience in both chemistry and biology. I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time. I believe that all kids can learn so much if they work as hard as they can and put forth maximum effort. I think it is very easy to learn/teach using as many hands on examples as possible.
