I love teaching as a facilitator. I want my students to be engaged and explore in the classroom. I actively seek ways to meet the needs of all students; I feel that each has something to offer. I encourage my students to take ownership in their learning and appreciate how important it is. As a college graduate, I have taken several courses to enhance my knowledge base in education. I have earned a BS in Elementary Education with endorsements in Reading and Special Education and a MS in Secondary Education with an endorsement in Guidance Education. I first introduce myself and get to know a little about the student I am tutoring. Then, I establish a baseline of what they have learned so that I can direct my attention to their strengths and weaknesses. Finally, I get into the material with the student and show them how and why the material is important and applicable in the world in which we live. I have served as a substitute teacher in Hayward, CA for 1 1/2 years. I worked as a tutor for Learning & Loving It in San Jose, CA for 3 years. My teaching style is to merge technology, current events, and thought provoking question into one. I related the given subject to the student as best as I can. This makes the subject personal and it makes the information easy to retain. During my education at Alcorn, I have helped a myriad of my colleagues with papers, historical facts, and a general/detail understanding of a given historical topic. I believe most students can succeed if they are taught good studying skills. I teach study skills, organizational skills, and note taking skills. I do not only teach names, dates, and places but I also teach them to learn to be able to retell the narrative which helps them to remember the names, dates and places. I have a Master of Arts degree in US History. I also teach online for a major online university. This has helped to me to understand what a student needs to know in order to succeed in college today. I believe that most students can do well in History or other subjects if they are taught the subject material and studying skills. In the past, I worked at a school for high school boys who had failed in school or who had trouble with the law.
