Use of Powerpoints with pictures and explanations which will not be found in textbooks. Strategies to correctly answer any nursing question, even if the material is unfamiliar to you Drills with multiple NCLEX questions from many different sources.
Previous nursing tutor at Dutchess Community College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Have compiled multiple Power Points over the years which explain concepts in simple terms and which have illustrations of concepts which will not be found in nursing textbooks. Unfortunately, nursing textbooks tend to be a faceless landscape which is presented to the student with many complex concepts. It is important that the student be able to visualize the concepts as nursing is all about understanding and not memorization. My comments on tutoring Testing Skills : I can teach the skills needed to be successful on a test.

The first strategy that I use is building a relationship with the student by getting to know who they are, what there favorite things are, subjects, goals etc... This helps me discover what strategies I can use to help them learn. I also try to discover which learning method works best. Are they visual or auditory learner? Do they learn by having things taught step by step, or do they learn through visual or read aloud examples? I believe that every student has the ability to learn and to succeed; it is about finding the best strategy and providing that extra support. Being that advocate for students is the reason I went into school counseling.
