A Little Bit About Me...

I am an elementary school teacher in the Northern Virginia area and have been tutoring students for the past 2 years. I love my job and would not change it for the world. Working with kids every day is something that I not only enjoy, but helps me as well. I learn something new every day. Being a teacher has taught me that all students learn in a different way and you have to address the needs of individual children.
Different children learn in different ways. Some are visual learners, some are auditory learners and some are kinesthetic learners. I like teaching in whatever way best connects with the student.

My comments on tutoring Reading : I have taught reading in grades 7-12.

I have taught for 12 years in both a private and public school in Greenville, SC. I am currently teaching at Anderson University but in the classroom and on-line. In grades 7-12 I have taught English literature and writing as well as drama courses. At Anderson University I teach English 101, 102, and 205.
Student centered instruction is the approach I use in my instruction. That means that the student's needs and learning style direct the way the information will be delivered and activities that will guide the learning. Students learn best by doing, so I only lecture for small amounts of time.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with all age groups. I have three younger siblings that I have helped tutor through all levels of their educations. I have also tutored on a college level while in attendance at Presbyterian College. I am very patient, easy-going, and considerate. I emphasize the personal nature of the teacher-learner relationship. I teach by asking questions, exploring options with learners, and focusing on learner responsibility, independence, and initiative. I like to push my students to their fullest potential and encourage them to take unique approaches to their studies.
As a liberal arts college graduate, I was educated in multiple subjects, with a focus on the importance of integrating curriculum. I love teaching. I especially love the reaction I get when a student understands a difficult concept they have been struggling with. To help struggling students, we break down difficult concepts into smaller pieces and help them translate difficult scientific jargon and other vocabulary into "regular English". Discovering how these words are broken down allows the students to recognize and translate words in the future. Whenever possible and appropriate, students have hands-on experience in the topic they are studying, and I relate the subject to their own lives. I am enthusiastic about the subjects I teach, I respect my students as young adults, and I do my best to let my students know that I care for them and their futures.

As a philosopher, I have what amounts to an unusual ability to convey to a student a sense of the value and importance of the subject he or she is studying. This is key in motivating any student. As a teacher, I am a careful student of the psychology and abilities of my student. To teach effectively, one must determine precisely where a student is developmentally both in terms of personal psychological maturation and intellectual skill levels, then go from there. Another key to effective teaching is the ability of the teacher to break complexities down into simpler, digestible units, then show how the units may be logically and effectually brought back together.

I feel that I am very much a hands-on learner, but I also enjoy engaging the minds of those that I educate. I enjoy researching new and more relevant ways to teach the applicable generation under my watch. Also, I feel that learning occurs outside of the classroom/main learning environment, and that as a mentor/teacher, I am able to pass on various types of lessons. My current place of study models this truth for me; by opening up their lives to their students. This shows them that life is a series of lessons; one that must be taken just as seriously. When engaged in a teaching opportunity, I attempt to be pleasant, passionate, and humorous. Above all, I desire those listening to enjoy the privilege it is to learn.
