A Little Bit About Me...

I received my BS in Mathematics and my MS in Industrial Mathematics from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. During my time as a graduate student, I was a teacher of College Algebra, Trigonometry, and of Calculus. I also tutored nearly every undergraduate mathematics course offered at NMT, including calculus, vector analysis, linear algebra, differential equations, probability and statistics, etc. I also took many Physics courses and have a very solid fundamental understanding of Newtonian mechanics. I am a capable computer programmer. I have a basic understanding of Chemistry. I have always had a passion for science and technology, as well as a deep fascination for mathematics.

Although it took me 15 years to obtain my B.S. in Business Management, I do not view that as a disadvantage. My travels with my military husband enriched my education by enabling me to experience different cultures, and by giving me the opportunity to meet, live among, and work with people of many different backgrounds. I have worked in the Los Alamos school system for the last two years as a Special Education Instructional Assistant, grades 3 through 6, helping children with many types of learning challenges improve their reading, writing, spelling, math, and organizational and social skills. I think tutoring students involves a lot of different techniques, considering students learn different ways. I found being patient is probably one of the most important parts of teaching. I worked with probably the hardest age group, freshmen. I learned that repetition was a great way to get them to learn. In math I would have them do the same type of problems with different numbers numerous times. This technique really worked and I was able to teach anybody. It made me feel good when students would tell me “thank you, I thought I would never learn that”. That gave me great self satisfaction knowing I made a difference in this person’s life.
