Psychology Professor/Reading Specialist

Over 25 years of teaching experience (all grade levels ~ from preschool to university graduate level courses). I enjoy tutoring, as it allows me to work one-on-one with a student to best assess their strengths and weaknesses in order to help them reach their goals. My doctoral work in Educational Psychology has given me a unique advantage in incorporating learning theory with applied teaching techniques. My clinical psychology experience and educational background has prepared me well for all forms of educational assessment. My post-Master's reading education work and research keeps me current on how best to diagnose and remediate reading comprehension and fluidity concerns. As an assistant psychology professor at the community college level, I am currently conducting my doctoral dissertation research on reading comprehension for this student population.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have 25 years of teaching experience in math and science at the secondary and tertiary levels. Concurrent with this, I have spent about ten years tutoring individual students and small groups in a variety of subjects for enrichment and remediation purposes. Typical examples of my tutoring/teaching include preparation for college admission, SAT, and SOL. Official recognition of my expertise is seen in my Virginia Teacher’s License with postgraduate professional certificate, which I have held continuously since 1992. An even higher level of honor comes from being a Finalist for the Sporn award at Virginia Tech in 2001 (in top group of 7, out of 192 professors with 480 nominations) after nomination by students “for excellence in teaching introductory subjects”.
