Helping students learn and learn how to grow

My teaching experience is broad across subjects and age levels. Learning and teaching excite me and I like to think that attitude rubs off on my students. It can be fun to learn, and even those subjects a student does not find enjoyable, can prove satisfying. I've taught middle school and high school, as well as at Bellevue College, Renton technical College, and North Seattle Community College. My own experiences include not just teaching, but also professional broadcasting, journalism (both broadcast and print newswriting, creative writing, editing, and reporting), writing a book, supervising employees as well as students, and poetry awards.
I like students to be comfortable, enjoy their experiences with me as much as possible, and learn not only the material they need to study, but also habits and practices that will help them with future studies.

I have found that tutoring sessions are most effective when they are fun! Many students find it difficult to stay focused, especially after a full school day. For this reason, I prefer to change tasks frequently and use a variety of fun games to switch up the pace of the session. Learning can be frustrating for many students when a particular subject does not come as naturally or easily as other subjects. Thus, I do my best to incorporate student's interests into reward systems and constantly give the student positive feedback about their progress to help motivate the student. I work hard to get to know the student and tailor tasks and activities to their particular learning style.
I write with great enthusiasm to apply for the position of Tutor. I recently graduated from Gettysburg College Magna Cum Laude earning my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Neuroscience. I ha ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I began tutoring in sixth grade when I voluntarily gave up my lunch recess each day to help in a first-grade classroom. I continued to tutor my peers in high school. After I graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, I was chosen by the Mayor of Bremerton to teach English in Japan for three years. Upon my return to the United States, I immediately went back to school for my teaching certificate in Elementary Education. I also worked as a Para educator in a special education classroom where I continued to use my teaching skills. I’m currently working as a guest teacher for two different school districts, teaching nearly all subjects in grades K-12.
The reason I chose to go to school for my teaching certificate is that I've always been passionate about learning. I think the best teachers are excited to constantly learn new things. My teaching ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I got my BA in linguistics from the University of Washington, and earned an MLitt and PhD in English language from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. My training in English and linguistics has equipped me for critical thinking from both the literary and scientific angles, and given me detailed knowledge of English grammar. Past positions as a proofreader for EFL students, an IT tutor, and a reading tutor for primary-level students each add further dimensions of experience and versatility to my teaching repertoire. I enjoy writing, and ten years of college and postgraduate studies in two countries have honed my skills, allowed me to teach in a wide range of settings, and provided many chances to share my knowledge with others.
I love to introduce students to new ways of thinking about language, literature, culture, and history; there's nothing better than "seeing the light go on". ... read more

I have worked in a variety of classroom settings, from a traditional 30-student class, to small groups, to one on one instruction. I place a high value on practical education. I graduated high school at the top of my class and received my AA degree just a few of months later- all while working full-time. I then obtained my BA in Organizational Management and I am now in a local graduate degree program. Because of my heavy workload I was able to develop effective and efficient study methods. I have been tutoring, mentoring and coaching children, teens and adults for the past nine years with great success to them academically, socially and emotionally.
