I received a technology degree in 1975. Several years later I returned to college to persue a Physics/Mechanical Engineering Degree from SUNY New Paltz and RPI. I was an "A" student in Physics and enjoyed tutoring many classmates. I was a guest lecturer several times at RPI. Due to work and family commitments I did not complete the degree. My wife and I homeschooled our children through the primary grades. I taught sciences. While an Employee at IBM, I wrote and taight technical courses. Physics is my forte and I love talking about and teaching the subject. I am especially helpfull to students challenged by word problems. Throughout college I would host study groups in Physics and Chemistry. I currently am a financial advisor.

A Little Bit About Me...

Over the past year, I have tried to extend my ability to share my love and appreciation of English and literature with others. As an English/Communications major, I am very knowledgable in a variety of subjects including grammar, writing composition and reading comprehension. Last year, as President of the Writers Forum, we spent several months tutoring as part of an after school program where we helped children in Baltimore write.
For writing, usually I conduct some exercises. The level of the critique and what to say depends heavily on the age of the student. For grammar, I would either find or create my own practice materials and we could go over whatever is necessary until I've decided that the student is making improvements or the student has succeeded.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is centered around full-filling the needs of student, especially in a tutor setting. Being focused and showing a genuine care and consideration for the student shows them that you not only respect them but want them to be successful. Positive re-inforcement is a main focus of mine and it has proven successful in the previous students I have worked one-on-one with. Also coming prepared, knowing what the student has difficulties with and what the student can catch onto easily is very important in planning what specific areas need to be addressed.
As an extremely motivated female, I am seeking employment through tutoring because I feel I have gained a great plethora of skills necessary to be successful in a variety of career fields, especially related to the job oppertunity offered through your company. I enjoy helping students understand the principles they are dealing with, rather than focusing on helping them simply "get the answer" to the problem at hand. My goal is for them to be able to generalize the concept and apply it in different contexts. To develop interest, I seek to discuss related information or similar problems as much as possible. For Physics in particular, this approach is key to providing a sound foundation for future learning.
Most of my career has been spent at IBM, where I built on my Physics background for a broad range of opportunities. I am now seeking to move into a teaching career and plan to start a Masters in Teaching in the Fall of 2009. During my educational development, I taught for three years in undergraduate and graduate school as part of the duties of a teaching Assistant. My goal with every child is to provide an educational experience tailored to her or him, specifically. I have mastered diagnostic techniques that will determine a child's needs in terms of learning-style, ability-level, and comfort-zone. In my experience, a constructivist approach, where the student is motivated to take control of her or his learning works best in that it provides children with the tools and confidence to remember and use the material. Children have a positive learning experience when they are provided a safe learning environment, tools with which to work, and space to fit new information into their schema of stored knowledge.
As an educator, I have had the pleasure of working with urban, rural, foreign, and special-needs students. After gaining experience and education in three major regions of this country, I feel well-prepared to teach and tutor students of all ... read more
