I have been a tutor since I was in a freshmen in high school. I have tutored students in English and reading skills. I tutored a group of sixth graders, who approved their state academic scores. It was a great joy for them to see they could do it.

I recently relocated to the Huntersville area. I recently graduated from UNCW with a degreee in Psychology with a focus on children. Since middle school, working with children has been my passion. I realized my dream after some of my cousins came over to America from the war torn country of Liberia and were having a very hard time adjusting. I was accepted to UNC Chapel Hill's Master's Program for Rehabilitation but declined after fearing it would take me down the path of working with the elderly instead of working with children. I have always had a good ability in math and sciences. I obtained a BA in Psychology from the University of Rochester, with a minor in Brain and Cognitive Sciences. I tutored college students in Psychology and Chemistry during my time there. I have also worked with all ages of children while working as a ski-instructor.
My teaching style ultimately depends of the student. I work much better with an individual or small group than with a class because I can find the angle that works best for each student. For younger children, I like to make learning into different games to keep their attention. For older students, I think it is important to establish some level of confidence early on within a subject so that they do not get too discouraged while new material is presented.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a strong believer that a tutor is a friend first, and an instructor second. Many times I have found that a student's difficulties issued from personal matters, such as a lack of confidence, rather than specific weaknesses with the material. I always make every effort to allow a student to feel as comfortable as possible within the instructional dynamic, and in my experience, this has made all the difference. While much can be gained from looking at previous evaluations and test scores, I think that it is crucial to let the student express their needs to make them feel comfortable and build a commitment to the teaching program. In individual sessions, I feel that allowing the student to discuss concepts out loud in addition to completing written exercises and preparing questions facilitates the learning process. I also find that real world analogies are useful ways of linking academic information to previously learned concepts and facilitate the student's understanding.
