A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT) in 1984 with a degree in mathematics. Since then, I have held a number of teaching positions in private secondary schools and colleges. I have taught the following subjects: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I&II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus. I have also tutored many students in those subjects (references available). I currently substitute teach in the mathematics department at Bangor High School on a fairly regular basis.
I believe that everyone can find success in mathematics, and I am a very patient and thorough teacher. My students have often told me that I explain topics very clearly, in language that is easy for them to understand. My experience as a tutor during my school years has taught me that students have hard time on subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Calculus and Biology, not because they didn't have good instructors, but because students were not provided enough background information on various topics. I have always employed a fun-filled curious environment to my students which have helped them come up with more questions and instill passion on the subject matters.
I provide enough background information on the subject matters first, give a big picture of the subject matters and then break things apart and teach them parts. This methodology has always been effective because students find it easier to learn all the necessary ingredients in order to grasp the big topic. I always make sure students are given enough practice questions on subjects like calculus, physics and chemistry.

The school of Education in North Carolina prepared me well. I am above all flexible. My license reads K-8 and I have taught Art K-6 for a year, Second Grade for two years in NC. Then in 2001 I taught Title One reading in TN for a year then Fourth grade for three more years. My family moved to Northern VA and I taught Fifth grade there for two years before moving back to TN for a year where I taught 8th grade Algebra, and 7th grade English. Since moving to Maine I have only had oppurtunity to work with alterative special Ed with grades 6, 7 and 8.
