More About This Tutor...

I'm a fifth-teen year old, currently enrolled at Thomas J. Corcoran High School, where I am a sophomore I currently take IB classes and wanted to start tutoring to pass the time and pick up a little extra cash. I'm drug free and have never tasted alcohol. I try to be patient and usually am. I'd prefer to work with children still in elementary or middle school, seeing as I haven't learned everything yet. I know the basic and more to just about everything eighth grade and below. Typically the setting in which the tutoring will take place will be my house in my dining room area and after that the student may watch television until his or her parent or guardian is there to pick them up.

More About This Tutor...

I am currently pursuing a degree in secondary education with a specialization in American History. I have a passion for the subject and for helping students succeed. I just completed my practicum last fall and was active in a 10th grade World History class for about 10 hours a week. During the summer of 2011 I was employed at girl scout camp in Lake George where I planned and taught History lessons for our weekly programs. I also have worked for the Walt Disney Company, in the Magic Kingdom. While I was there, I was able to do American History trivia and tours for the Liberty Square area.
I really enjoy engaging the student in discussion of the topic and helping them experience the events in History rather than just remembering dates and locations.

LESSONS SHOULD ACCOMMODATE STUDENT LEARNING STYLES

I have 15 years of teaching experience with special needs students in a rural school district. During this time i provided private tutoring sessions for Elementary, Middle, High School and College students. At the college level my tutoring experience is with reading, writing, study skills and organization. Currently I develop educational programming for incarcerated youth.
My belief is that all students have different learning styles. Therefore lessons need to be individualized to meet student needs. In order to be successful students need to be engaged by creative teachers. My teaching experience has taught me to accommodate these needs when developing lesson plans.

I recognize the importance of a dynamic teaching style- one that adjusts depending on both the subject matter and the student. I am very experienced with addressing procrastination and anxiety. A patient, encouraging, and directed atmosphere is a great aid in learning. Tutoring should take away the distractions of the classroom to enable the student to learn one-on-one, to solidify what is taught in school. I have the tools to help your child succeed, and would love to share in their academic successes.

My teaching style will vary depending on the class as a whole or the type of student I am working with individually. In order to be an effective teacher I have seen that I need to be flexible with how I present material to a student. If a student is visual I am able to create diagrams and use props to show a concept rather than only speak the material. Some students need hands on and things like manipulatives in math help create a concrete way to remember a concept, and this is also something I do. In my mind success as a teacher is largely based on the success of the student and I am able to figure out what a specific child needs and adjust my teaching style to that student.

A Little Bit About Me...

While attending Syracuse University I tutored classmates in both philosophy and English, emphasizing writing and analytical skills while suggesting strategies for breaking down and understanding the difficult language of critical and philosophical texts. Furthermore, I helped students learn and understand effective editing both for content and grammar to improve their argumentation skills for essays and presentations. In addition to tutoring college students, I tutor my five nieces and nephews (informally) who range in age from four years old to thirteen years old. I currently hold a Dual Degree from Syracuse University having graduated Magna Cum Laude.
While I do explain procedures as thoroughly as I am able, I attempt to have students flesh out their ideas through their own process. It is my belief that the student must learn to accomplish things independently in order to ... read more

I attended Dominican College of Blauvelt, where I began my studies as an English major with a concentration in childhood education. As an English major, I worked as a tutor in the writing center as an aide to college students. Here I would help students get their thoughts on paper in a coherent manner or provide any service they needed for their papers. I currently work as a substitute teacher for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse. I have had both positive and negative experiences, but these times provide great feedback that cannot be experienced unless in a classroom.
A teacher can be anyone, but not everyone can be a teacher. Every child has a unique learning style and it is the job of the teacher to understand this and find the best way to teach the child. I am a patient and understanding person because I once to was a student. I knew that I had certain learning styles that ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children and believe that my enthusiasm for learning will help motivate them to further pursue their own studies. I am confident that I will help your child find academic success. As the oldest child, I have grown patient, understanding, and considerate. I believe that all children can learn and I look forward to working with yours. My teaching style is hands on and interactive, focusing primarily on positive reinforcement and encouragement. I believe that all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences. A Little Bit About Me...

I am a strong believer in relational learning and that is why I support the concept of tutoring. One-on-one instructional guidance from someone who knows and respects you is a great motivation for learning to take place. I am a patient, sympathetic, and loving person, but I also like to push myself and others to accomplish the most that they are capable of achieving. I am naturally very encouraging and supportive and always willing to help someone in need. I believe that every child is unique and gifted in certain ways and that by spending time with them and encouraging them in their strengths they will find the challenge and support to succeed.

A Little Bit About Me...

I would describe my teaching style as ecclectic. Students learn in different ways which enables me to employ all kinds of methods to tap into any particular learning style. For instance, I believe in old-fashioned memorization (math. facts) in addition to hands-on kind of learning. I have an ability to motivate kids to want to learn, which I believe is the key to a successful partnership. I love kids !
I spent my entire teaching career at Hammondsport Central School in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York State. In that time, I taught every level of every grade (7-12). In addition to the basic high school English curriculum, I designed and taught four electives which became a permanent part of the program. I can teach anything in this field, including test preparation. Since I have been retired, I have worked with several Korean students and one Russian one.
