My past experiences have taught me that I have an ability to motivate youth through rapport building and mutual respect. I know that touching one’s life is a huge reward to everyone involved. During my service as a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa, I taught chemistry and tutored the students in all fields in my spare time. I believe that the individual child dictates my teaching style. I learned that no two children learn the same way. I usually start by asking the child questions that prompt them to figure out the answer themselves. I feel that children remember most information that the figure out on their own rather than something dictated to them. I also feel that generating proficient study skills is important. I love to work with high school and middle school kids. My teaching style is firm in the sense that I will not do work for the student. Growing up I always had a love for math and science. This drew me into the field of engineering. While earning a degree in Electrical Engineering from Notre Dame much of my time was spent in study groups and helping others understand areas they had trouble with. I have always had the desire to become a teacher. I realize that every person is different in how they learn and sometimes you have to be creative in how you teach.
