A Little Bit About Me...

Education, teaching in particular, gives individuals the opportunity to give back what they have received. It is communication on a broader level than just simply putting forth information to whomever chooses to accept it. I started my career in education before I set foot on a college campus, through a peer-tutoring program in my high school. This experience allowed me to work with severely disabled peers learning functional skills for independence. Since then I have worked as an aide in emotional/behavior and multiple-disability middle school classrooms, as well as LD-resource, ED self contained and SC occupational diploma program. I will tailor my teaching to the individual student. One thing I've learned in my education program is that some kids learn visually while others learn auditorily, and so on. I believe in critical thinking; that is one skill that is lacking in school and in society generally. The task of the teacher, ultimately, is to get their student to that point, where he or she is challenging his or her mental models or basic assumptions concerning reality, with the tools the teacher has given the student.

My teaching style is one where I combine the approach that best suits the individual’s personal learning style with proven sound educational best practices. I have had successes with motivating students who usually do not like to read. I have been able to help them by meeting them where they are and then helping them to formulate and meet their own goals. Although I have been self employed for the last 6 years, I went back to school last year to add Science and Math for middle school to my certification. I passed the Praxis for both of those subjects spring of 2010. I was not able to get a full time teaching position this year. I went back to working for myself but would love to tutor. I have tutored for 3 years while I worked for Tryon Elementary school. I had great success with the students I worked with, in particular concerning math. I am very qualified to work in a tutoring capacity.
I believe in good classroom management and organized lesson plans. I set appropriate boundaries and expect the students to follow the rules that are set before them.
