My comments on tutoring Chess : I was taught as an adolescent.

My method of tutoring is to work with students where they are and add to their skills, to accomplish the final outcome, preferably an "A" or "B." Some students are visual learners and some are informational learners, or some students combine the two. The potential I see in students is what I try to bring out and have them realize they are capable of going a step further, to reach their goal. The importance of education and the students' continuance of same cannot be stressed enough.
I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. In addition, tips were given to enhance test-taking skills in hard-to-Ace subjects ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I think the best way to teach is to show students how they can break down problems and find answers to questions that may, at first glance, seem overwhelming. I have yet to meet someone who is incapable of grasping a subject, and I am able to stay calm and remain patient as students begin to expand their knowledge in areas that are new to them. While I am not able to learn things for a student, my job as a tutor is to provide them with the encouragement, support, and knowledge that I have so that they can obtain an understanding of their subject.
As a recent college graduate, the stress, confusion, and (ultimately) joy involved in the attempt to master new subjects are fresh in my memory. While nothing can replace experience, I believe that being young provides me with an edge over those older than me when it comes to connecting with students. I have tutored a wide range of stu ... read more

My style has always been to encourage questions from the student or with the many people who have worked for me over the years to challenge the status quo. I encourage individuals to stretch the envelope and to seek different solutions rather than accept what has been done before. I have also stressed that there is never a bad question or wrong to think outside the box. For example I have always asked students, "Why study history?" What I relish now,is that many respond, "To learn how we got here." Communication is the key and it is very important for the student to trust and respect the relationship that develops between student and tutor. With out this trust learning becomes very difficult.
In college I tutored at one of the high schools while monitoring study hall three days a week. After graduation I joined the Peace Corp. I served in the Tonga Islands in the South Pac ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have an experience of over 10 years as professor of mathematics at all levels of education(k5-k12),including preschool. I worked all this time as a tutor as well, knowing the issues the kids can have and got the necessary experience to help them overcome those issues.
I like the work I do and love working with children. I strongly believe that every child can learn to think mathematically, but each in different ways.To learn mathematics is to work hard and persevering, that's why my motto is "1% inspiration and 99% perspiration (work)

I value certain aspects of teaching methodology not necessarily emphasized in previous generations. I view teaching as a highly dynamic process. In regards to my own views of teaching, I think learning must be interesting and fun. A teacher will not only be a guide on the path to a better understanding of difficult concepts, he will also be a motivator to stimulate open minds. Finally, I believe that knowledge is a right for all. As a teacher, I will be on the front line accomplishing what I feel society needs most: a more educated workforce and students more prepared for their professional careers

A Little Bit About Me...

While I earned a degree in both history and group social studies, I feel I am well-versed in other areas. I currently work at a charter school in Detroit as a math paraprofessional with freshmen algebra. I also substitute within the school most recently in a college algebra class, so I am familiar with the upper-levels of math. In addition to these skills, I feel I am a very polished writer in terms of grammar and writing style. The major in history forced me to write a number of papers, including two research papers that tallied more than 25 pages each. Furthermore, I worked with college students as a history and social studies tutor for classes such as American history, European history, micro and macro economics, political science etc.
My teaching style is simple: get the kids involved. Make the subjects relevant to them. While working as a paraprofessional in a Detroit charter ... read more

I dealt directly with children and families from disenfranchised populations, demographically diverse populations, and special needs populations. What I value most is having the opportunity to work with adults and children simultaneously. This gave me a broad over-standing of how to approach very challenging situations. In addition, what I have found to be an effective tool when working with academically challenged youth is having patience, and showing unconditional positive self-regaurd.
My resume highlights my ability, knowledge, and expertise in individual and group therapy at a master level in the field of social work. During my time at Eastern Michigan University, I was able to advance my skill set and knowledge-base by being in a supervisory role. More About This Tutor...

After years in the field of automotive repair, I took an old hobby and turned it into a career. I attended Oakland Community College where I came to understand my abilities, and at the suggestion of professors, went about to earn a BA in history combined with teaching certification in history, political science, and social studies. After completing the BA, I felt that I had merely opened the door to historical thought and process, and continued toward a master's degree. I spent a number of years as a substitute teacher, both long and short term, and with the completion of my MA, returned to Oakland Community College as history professor.
My style is akin to the Socratic Method, while I adapt myself to the needs of my students, maintaining a balance between discussion and lecture. I avail myself of technologies, to be used or not depending on the situation. My students are expec ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I began officially tutoring four years ago, starting up a private tutoring business. Through it, I have taught ages 5 through 55 in nearly all subjects, including mathematics, science, physics, ACT, and English. I also have tutored publicly at Oakland University for one year, where I earned my tutoring certification (level 1).
My passion is in watching others to succeed, and I am willing to change my own methods to make that happen. Thus, my tutoring style depends almost entirely on the student as I have found that the most common reason a tutor is needed is that the student's learning style does not match with the teacher's teaching style. I can tutor through examples, visually drawing concepts, talking, describing the reasons behind a concept, and most importantly, I can relate almost every subject to daily life.
