Mathematics Teacher Grades 7-12

I like to have the kids be interactive with my my teaching. I have the kids fill out "fill in the blanks" while I am lecturing and I like to have the kids come up to the board and do problems after the lecturing. I also like to apply real world applications when possible.
I am currently working as a substitute teacher in many districts in metro Detroit. I have taught Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Precalculus, and Trigonometry at Oakland Christian School where I did my student teaching internship. Although the majority of my work experience is in business, my selling and people skills are tremendous as a teacher. Asking the "right" questions are the key to sales and can also be applied to teaching.

My comments on tutoring Statistics : Well studied under the obtainment of my minor in Math.

As a Graduate of Saginaw Valley State University, I have obtained a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry and Minors in Math and Biology. I have gained knowledge in most of the sub-sets on those subjects as well as High School or College entry level in most other academic subjects. I have tutored before as a volunteer, in paid sessions, and have often helped out friends at various educational levels.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a graduate of Michigan State University and achieved a AS in applied mathematics, along with a BS in both computer science and mathematics. I was a teaching assistant at the university for three years, and assisted in the Learning center for a few more. I taught a few classes at Davenport University in Caro as well. I have tutored several math students before, and have given piano lessons to a number of students as well.
When teaching, I not only want my students to be able to use basic formulas, but have a thorough understanding as well. I am very logical and exact in my thinking process. Since I am not good at reading minds, communication is very important. Let me know if you understand a topic or explanation. There are often a number of approaches to solving a problem which can be tried.

In 2006 I graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Engineering Science. It gave me an understanding in a broad range of mathematical areas as well as areas of other sciences. During that time I worked with volunteer organizations like Salem Housing and Habitat for humanity for three years, which enabled me to mentor a variety of ages. In the last year I've worked with a homeschooling group on a project called, "Leaping Lizards."
I love people's capacity for learning. It gives me joy to know that I have helped another learn something new. I am patient, relaxed, and try to keep tutoring interesting for the recipient. It's important that the tutoree is engaged and enjoys grasping new lessons. I like to guide students into understanding the problem rather than just merely giving them the answer.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a recent college graduate with a BA in Finance. I was highly driven during my college years and was able to graduate earlier than my peers. I am highly proficient in math, grammatical skills, and various computer applications. During my process of achieving a higher eduaction, I tutorted and mentored students in English, Math, and Arts, while advising on life lessons and how to better yourself as a person.
I am firm believer that education is the key to success no matter what the person wants to do with their life. I try my best to make the learning experience fun and fruitful for students so that the material is easier to understand. All students have the ability to be great with the right amount of guidance which is where I come in. It is one thing for me to help a student understand the material at hand, but I also want to make a difference in their lives so that they ... read more

I believe it is important to connect the past learning experiences of each student, and spark interest, and motivation in future learning of the subject. I believe the differences in the discovery process in each individual arouses creativity in the way problems are reasoned through which inspires each student intrinsically. I give quick, formative assessments to determine students' level of knowledge of the content, and their learning style. I provide instruction using open-ended question discussions, real world manipulative, multiple solutions for the same problem, and the promotion of self-regulated learning to help students gain ownership over their learning experiences.

The one thing that I observed about the learning process, is that a person quickly grasps a concept if he/she is interested, or the topic is thoughtful and challenges the wit of a person and lastly, a person is very comfortable in learning through his/her friends. Nobody is stupid not to grasp a concept. It is the methodology, technique and feeling of comfort and interest, that is required. Hence I try to be affable and was more involved. A picturization or a real life example is more likely to fit in a person's mind. I used this technique and was very successful. With this regard, about 70% of my class scored 90% and above in their respective examinations.

My teaching style is very laid back. I know that every student learns differently and I try to accommodate that. When I am working with someone individually, it is easy to see if I need to backtrack and explain a concept another way. In a classroom setting it is sometimes a little more difficult to do this; However, I still want to be my best and for the students to be their best, as this is the only way for them to meet their learning potential. So, I actually have students fill out a note card at the end of each class with their comments and questions so that I can review them before the next meeting. I like to have that immediate feedback from students, as I see it as a great alternative to being the teacher who does not listen and is inflexible.

A Little Bit About Me...

I began officially tutoring four years ago, starting up a private tutoring business. Through it, I have taught ages 5 through 55 in nearly all subjects, including mathematics, science, physics, ACT, and English. I also have tutored publicly at Oakland University for one year, where I earned my tutoring certification (level 1).
My passion is in watching others to succeed, and I am willing to change my own methods to make that happen. Thus, my tutoring style depends almost entirely on the student as I have found that the most common reason a tutor is needed is that the student's learning style does not match with the teacher's teaching style. I can tutor through examples, visually drawing concepts, talking, describing the reasons behind a concept, and most importantly, I can relate almost every subject to daily life.

I believe that the style and approach of teaching varies with each individual student and that it is the tutor’s responsibility to recognize and find the appropriate methods to work with each student. The only teaching style that I believe should be the same across the board for all students is a positive learning environment. I am very patient, energetic, disciplined and compassionate. I believe that every child has the ability to do well and they just need the proper resources and support to get there. Beyond a positive support system, I will make every effort to work with each student on a case by case basis to help them achieve their academic goal.

I enjoy working with children. I have volunteered my time as a football, baseball and basketball coach for several years. I believe in following the classroom curriculum of the student and using that as a starting point for learning. Communication is a key ingredient in the formula for success. It is essential to have a positive feedback mechanism in place to encourage education. Every child has his/her own strengths and it is my goal to discover, nurture, and maximize these areas.
