A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching for twenty seven years in various grades, schools, and types of classes. I taught for 16 years in a bilingual classroom. My last 11 years of teaching have been in a traditional classroom. I have taught every grade level from 1st to 7th, and currently, I even teach an ESL class after school. My areas of expertise would be writing, English grammar, Spanish, and social sciences. I currently tutor students to prepare for their state tests in May. I feel that my experience has led me to a place where I can say that I am prepared and qualified to teach most students with success.
I respect my students and they respect me. I expect them to work hard, because I work hard, as well. I will do what is humanly possible to help them achieve their goals. I connect with students on a personal level to find out their manner of learning, and after that, I find materials which w ... read more

Having homeschooled my children (eldest is attending a top 20 public university)and volunteering extensively in the school community, I have become familiar with a wide variety of learning styles. My legal background has prepared me for tutoring in that I am able to effectively communicate with the student and present the material in a manner conducive to a learning experience(similar to explaining legalese to a lay person). Above all, I strive to ensure that the student has a true understanding of the materials, as opposed to simple memorization. I strongly encourage the student to take an analytical approach to learning, and to view both sides of any issue so that true understaning of the subject matter is achieved.
In a one-on-one situation, I prefer dialogue. Assuming the student does the assigned work before the session, I find that a informal, relaxed conversation on the ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

People are always surprised when they find out I'm a math nerd. I'm outgoing, I like to joke and I play sports. But believe it or not, I actually do enjoy math and this is one of the biggest reasons for my success as a tutor/teacher. I don't fake my enthusiasm and this helps engage students. I like to think of myself as fun and I like to make a joke here and there. I believe that a lot of times, less is more when it comes to teaching math. I try to do as little leading as possible when helping students solve problems so that they will be best equipped in the future to solve on their own. I have always enjoyed teaching and I love sharing success with others.

More About This Tutor...

At the University of California-Berkeley, I have pursued my academic interests and personal convictions through a variety of study, work and volunteer experiences. As a student, I have developed strong research, writing and study skills. I have earned two bachelor's degrees in English Literature and Legal Studies and received honor's in Legal Studies after completion of a ninety page research paper. Outside of the classroom, I have had the enjoyable and rewarding experience of mentoring two teen girls for the past two years. In addition, I also work in a law office as a legal and financial assistant, furthering my writing, communication and mathematical skills.
I greatly enjoy teaching and feel accomplished helping someone achieve his or her goals. Particularly, I believe that mastering new concepts can be challenging but also a rewarding experience. I feel it is essential to appro ... read more

I believe that students can reach their potential if they are given the tools that they need. My job is to be the toolbox for them. As a special education teacher, I adapt my teaching style to meet the needs of the students. I believe that a child should be given a vast amount of positive reinforcement and always be spoken to and taught with respect. I also believe children need boundaries set that will consistently be reinforced. Our job is to teach them those boundaries but to do so with compassion. It truly makes my day, when I see a student that finally "gets" what we are discussing or learning. Teaching is a great joy for me.
