My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : I have worked with many students who have ADD/ADHD and developed strategies to help them become successful and confident in school.

I have been working with Elementary aged children for over 7 years. I have had many different teaching experiences working with grades K-2. I have tutored primarily in reading with an emphasis on guided reading strategies, phonemic awareness, and word building. In the area of math, I have experience with the programs: Calendar math, Investigations, and Singapore Math. For Writing, I have used the Lucy Culkins Program as well as 6 Traits writing. I enjoy working with students to help them gain confidence and find their passion in learning.
When I first meet my students, I want them to feel comfortable with me and what we will be doing. I try to get to know them as we work together and find out what their interests, hobbies, strengths, weaknesses, and other important factors in their lives. I will work on homework, projects, test preparation, as well as activities and lessons I h ... read more

I knew I always wanted to work with children and I have loved all of my teaching experiences. I pushed myself to get a dual certification in Elementary and Special Education from Duquesne University. Out of college I had a few long-term sub positions in area school districts before getting a full time teaching position at Charters Valley School District. At Charters Valley I taught eighth grade learning support for 4 years before transferring to be third grade classroom teacher for 2 years. My learning support classroom had a range of disabilities from reading difficulty to autism. While teaching at Charters Valley, I continued my education and by getting my Master’s Equivalency in education. I tutored while I was teaching full time and even tutored a few students who were home schooled due to medical issues. I quit my teaching position to raise my child. I do stay connected to th ... read more

My goal is to simply to help. Everyone can learn, even in subjects they find difficult. I understand from first-hand experience why people can find the sciences difficult, especially Math and Physics, because I myself have had great difficulty with them in the past. So I know how hard it is, and I know that its possible to succeed despite this. I think the key is for someone to find a method of studying that works for them, and everyone is different. Of course, another difficulty, especially with the harder sciences, is simply understanding the concepts, and its always useful to have someone other then the teacher to try and explain them in another, hopefully simpler, way.
I have always loved learning for its own sake, mostly because of my passion for reading as a child. Though 120 credits are required to graduate with a B.S. in Physics, I graduated with 238 credits, which I filled ... read more

I enjoy teaching and working with all children. They are our future. Through my teaching career, I have seen that children learn in many different ways. Some children learn faster than others and there are some children who are visual learners and others who are audio learners. When I first meet children either in a classroom or by tutoring them, I like to give a quick assessment of their learning because that is how I derive my lessons. If a child or a group of children need visual props, I will create them or if a child would need to be challenged then I would extend my lessons and materials academically higher. The way that I teach is age-appropriate and I will never let a child fall behind- I will always let them achieve to their potential.
I have been teaching children in grades Pre-school through the third grade for 14 years. My experiences have been a lead teacher in a Head ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have an innate instinct to teach and a drive that brings me great satisfaction from teaching. In working with children from preschool age through high school, I have come to recognize the uniqueness of each age group but have developed no preference as I enjoy working with all children. I have found that I have been able to meet the needs of the most challenging students both academically and behaviorally in a wide variety of environments. From all of my vast experiences I have found that I can teach anyone, anytime, anywhere and they will learn no matter what challenges are present. Every child can learn and every child can succeed; it takes a special person to see the strengths of each child and build upon them.
I am a 2006 honors graduate of Kent State University's Early Childhood Education, earning both an AS and BS and am currently working on a MS in Special Education. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always been very mathematical, even though I did little to cultivate it. One of my favorite classes in college was a statistics course I took, and the other was a logic class. I love to read books, and I enjoy chess as a hobby. Teaching is my true passion, and I regret leaving a teaching job to pursue a law degree, and I can only hope to pick up where I left off. I was a teacher/counselor at a teenage group home for 4 years. This was the most rewarding work that I ever did.
I am a proponent of two things. First, encouragement. I always encourage the smallest success before I point out any failure. I never get frustrated or upset. I never get angry or disappointed. I know that encouragement breeds success, and success is the goal. Second, I speak to children as if they know what I mean. In other words, I never talk down to them. I almost feel as if I might treat kids more lik ... read more
