At our first session, I ask that each student complete a short quiz to determine their learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc). Every child learns differently and I believe that discovering what works best for each student is the first step towards success. Once we figure out what his/her learning style is, I cater to this. If they learn best by reading, I'll prepare worksheets based on what they're learning; if they're hands-on learners, I'll make an activity.
My experience with tutoring began in high school, when I started assisting elementary students with homework through one of my clubs. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that teaching styles need to be flexible to the student. I have worked with a very wide variety of students, from the severely limited autistic youth to the highly gifted medical student. While approach and focus might vary for the individual or subject matter the essence remains the same. I try to envision at least 3 different ways of approaching a problem, I discuss material but let the students ask questions which I then tailor my explanations toward. Everyone sees a problem slightly differently and if you allow yourself an open mind and creative thinking often you can help them break through a difficult problem because you are able to see it their way.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am British born and educated, and discovered my passion for teaching in Vietnam when I taught English as a second language to children aged from 4-12. Since then, I have graduated with an Honors degree in History, and worked with several child-centered programs. I am currently working for Active:Water in Kalamazoo where part of my role involves educating children about the water crisis, I am also interning for the Humane Society in their Educational Programing department. In the past I have worked for Girls on the Run International, Samaritans UK, & the Santi School Project.
