My style of teaching, especially with tutoring, is to find out what kind of learner my student is: tacit, oral, or verbal. Then the lesson style can be geared to that, while leading the student to become more aware of the other abilities and options. Also, it is imperative that students understand why they are learning what is being presented to them. Cause and effect leads to greater awareness and more objective, analytical, and critical thinking. As a teacher, I try to understand the student's mind in order to present the material in such a way that it will fit together with the student's preexisting knowledge. As an Associate Research Professor at Duke University I conducted research on the health of the elderly population and the genetic background to age-related diseases. I am well published, always serving as my own statistician. The background to most common disorders in adults is complex involving multiple genes, thus I used advanced fuzzy latent class analysis to identify high and low risk sets of gene variants and to define the level of risk for individuals.
