The most effective way to instruct students is through experience. Unless a student can take hold of a subject for himself and make it his own, he will never master the information. My past tutoring experience has prepared me well to show students that they can succeed in any subject. Students first have to be told that they can achieve anything as long as they accomplish their very best. I believe that one of the best ways to introduce a subject is through a hands on approach. A Little Bit About Me...

I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. If the student can figure it out for themselves they will achieve a much better level of understanding.

Once I build a rapport with the student, I try to impress on them the crucial nature of the subject, without being overbearing. Finally, we delve into the material, celebrating success and ferreting out the problems that may confound us.
After completing my MS in geophysics I went to work in the oil business. I found this to be morally troubling and turned to teaching as a way to give back to the community.
