More About This Tutor...

The most effective way to instruct students is through experience. Unless a student can take hold of a subject for himself and make it his own, he will never master the information. My past tutoring experience has prepared me well to show students that they can succeed in any subject. Students first have to be told that they can achieve anything as long as they accomplish their very best. I believe that one of the best ways to introduce a subject is through a hands on approach. Teachers have to be the bridge to a child's educational success.
Having begun my first year of teaching in the fall of 2010, I realize that my heart is truly in education. In May of 2010 I received my bachelor degree, BS in Early Childhood Education. My rigorous education has given me substantial insight into the "total package" needed to learn and succeed at a high level. The ability to learn material is critical, and I excel at teaching difficult concepts and skills to a range of different learning "types". However, the ability to organize, prioritize, and focus is equally critical to academic success, and my experience with a wide range of subjects from art and literature to science, social sciences, and business as well as a range of different personalities allows me to teach virtually any subject with a sympathetic understanding of how each individual's personality learns best. Some people learn well step-by-step, others learn better through self-experimentation. My familiarity with a range of learning styles allows me to find the best way to teach each individual.

I love teaching and I am really passionate about making sure that my students achieve a deeper meaning of a subject. I like to take time to work with kids and make sure that they really understand the meaning of certain concepts. When teaching math I like to work with lots of hands on materials and visual aids. I believe that all kids are capable of learning and achieving at the highest standards.

A Little Bit About Me...

I thoroughly enjoy working with children in a classroom setting. I am a teacher/tutor that is very patient and understanding of children's needs in a school/educational environment. I like to find what interests students and elaborate and expand upon those things. I like to help children delve into what makes them want to learn and enjoy the entire learning process. I like to a great deal of hands on, fun, reading material.
When I was in elementary school I had a really rough time in reading. I dedicated myself to years of being tutored and then in turn, tutoring myself so that I could help students like me in elementary be the best possible readers they could be. I have tutored throughout the years in various subjects, but reading and phonics has always held a very important role in my life. I have tutored, voluntarily, for city organizations, as well as for different school ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. If the student can figure it out for themselves they will achieve a much better level of understanding.

A great personal tutor helped me achieve a 710 (94th percentile) on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). When learning a new idea, I believe in repetition and creativity...and conceptual "shortcuts" are okay too!

I enjoy teaching and working with children of all ages. I received an award for classroom management, and work well with students who are learning English as a second language. I believe all children have the potential to excel if given the opportunity. I believe that attitude and approach create the climate in a classroom. I believe that learning is growth and not accumulation. I also believe a student must believe a teacher cares before they will care what a teacher knows. It is also important for a teacher to help a student develop positive self-esteem.
I taught in a bi-lingual charter school and worked with students from many diverse ethnic backgrounds I also substituted in my off-track time for ESL instructors and Special-Ed students with learning disabilities. Each year I taught I attended special seminars on reading development and literature.

My teaching style is relaxed and friendly. If the student doesn't like working with me, then the effort is for naught. Once I build a rapport with the student, I try to impress on them the crucial nature of the subject, without being overbearing. Finally, we delve into the material, celebrating success and ferreting out the problems that may confound us.
After completing my MS in geophysics I went to work in the oil business. I found this to be morally troubling and turned to teaching as a way to give back to the community. To my delight I have found that I love to teach, I connect well with kids and they seem to enjoy my teaching style. I have been teaching for eight years and I look forward to many more.

Academics and higher education are very much a driving force in my life. I enjoy learning new skills and learning about new subjects, also sharing that knowledge with others. I have experience in tutoring other students in college level courses, such as science and English essay writing, as well as teaching younger children. I have experience in college level chemistry, physics and math (from algebra to calculus to ODE's).
