A Little Bit About Me...

Upon the completion of my undergraduate studies, I was encouraged to sign up as a substitute teacher. This subsequently led to a full time position, where I taught Junior High Mathematics. I also coached wrestling and mentored the Quiz Bowl team.
I truly miss teaching and mentoring kids. I approach teaching as an opportunity to bring out the maximum potential within each student. I am a firm believer each student views learning differently, meaning as educators we need to ensure no student is left behind. I take a hands-on approach to education, stressing the importance of real life experiences. We should illustate to students how "what is learned today will become practical later in life."

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that no two students learn alike and the most important thing is to make sure students are having fun with learning. If learning is looked at as boring or hard students will try to avoid it, when learning is fun students learn without realising the work involved. I am willing to try a new tactic with every new task and am always learning myself. As someone new to the education field I am always researching new ideas in the education field.

I obtained my BA in Social Work and have worked in that field since 1993. In 2005 I began a part time job as an Adult Education instructor for Sentinel Career Center where my primary focus was language arts/writing. I was part of the STAR reading program where I became certified to teach adults to read. In this program and as a GED instructor I have tutored many individuals of varying ages, education levels and backgrounds. Currently, I hold a bachelor of history degree and I am working on obtaining teacher licensure at the Masters level in curriculum and instruction: AYA social studies.
I believe that students learn best when they are involved in the process. Therefore I like to put students in charge of their learning-whether it is presenting information gathered for a presentation or helping to develop the topics that will be discussed in a particular unit; as long as they are involved and not passive in the process students will learn. A Little Bit About Me...

I feel the need for tutoring is the need to simply obtain information in a form that is different from the one presented in the classroom. As a tutor, I work to break things down into their constituent pieces and explain each of these pieces in turn. This is a more time-intensive method of instruction, of course, as the breaking down of information is totally dependent on the way it must be done for it to make sense to the student. Tutoring allows this method to be used, as one-on-one, this method is just as quick as the standard schoolroom methods.
