My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Trained in the Wired for Reading curriculum

My teaching style is very student driven. I take students interest in account when helping them. The ultimate goal of education is teaching students to overcome their weakness and teach them to use tools, so they can love learning. My hope is that students learn to see their growth in order to be content with their education experiences.
I have taught in the Mukilteo/Everett area for 5 years. I have worked as a special education teacher for students who spend most of their time in a general education classroom. My experience and background focuses on math, reading, writing/spelling, social/emotional, and behavior skills. During my years as a teacher I have worked to help develop and implement IEP (Individual Education Plans)

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is usually a one-on-one approach beginning with material that is proven to be relatively easier for the student so that that we can establish an enjoyable, interactive approach. We will progress to the level that will take more "thinking" on the student's part. Challenges are also necessary. I have a quiet manner and recognize the importance of the student knowing what is being asked of him/her. My goal is to enhance "independent" thinking in my students. I understand the importance of each individual student's strengths and weaknesses and help the student to thrive on their strengths and continue to improve their weaknesseses. My goal is for all children to reach their potential.I love children, I love teaching!!!!!

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been interested in education my entire life. After receiving my B.A. from Penn State University, I was an elementary teacher in my hometown, Oxford, Pennsylvania. This experience ignited a spark in me to continue my education. I received an M.A. and Ed.D in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University. More recently, I was a student at Western Washington University in their elementary teacher certification program. I've had experience as an elementary and high school paraeducator working with special needs' students. I enjoy tutoring children of all ages in reading, especially phonics, and some math.
As a regular classroom teacher, I felt hampered due to class size. I was never satisfied connecting with just a few students. Every student was important to me. I realized that the only way for me to really reach students was by reducing the teacher-student r ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have found that tutoring sessions are most effective when they are fun! Many students find it difficult to stay focused, especially after a full school day. For this reason, I prefer to change tasks frequently and use a variety of fun games to switch up the pace of the session. Learning can be frustrating for many students when a particular subject does not come as naturally or easily as other subjects. Thus, I do my best to incorporate student's interests into reward systems and constantly give the student positive feedback about their progress to help motivate the student. I work hard to get to know the student and tailor tasks and activities to their particular learning style.
I write with great enthusiasm to apply for the position of Tutor. I recently graduated from Gettysburg College Magna Cum Laude earning my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Neuroscience. I ha ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As it has evolved over the years, my teaching style has become a mix of facilitation and direct instruction, with the goal always being the student's making his own discovery. I was trained in the Socratic style, which seems to match well with inquiry-based learning, and that is how my classes usually end up. I introduce activities, then gradually release them to the students to lead.
Over the last 15 years, I have worked in various different areas. First, I taught adult ESL, and had occasional tutoring gigs with Russian speakers learning English, and some English speakers learning Russian. Currently, I work as a special education teacher. Part of my job is to work in small ratios with honors students who have disabilities. This "study skills" class often requires one-on-one tutoring.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate from college with a degree in geology, I am familiar with challenges that students may face in succeeding in school. The process of college taught me many learning skills that ultimately helped me succeed. During college and high school, I took many math and science classes, however, I have also taking several writing classes, and completed a senior thesis, which greatly improved my writing. Since high school I have been involved with several tutoring opportunities, including tutoring elementary level math, as well as, volunteering with environmental education organization.
Through out my academic career I have faced many challenges, and many times have had to turn to tutors and peers for help, as a result I am familiar with the dilemmas children can face. Through my experience with children, I believe that all children find success if the material is presented in a m ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I began tutoring in sixth grade when I voluntarily gave up my lunch recess each day to help in a first-grade classroom. I continued to tutor my peers in high school. After I graduated from Seattle Pacific University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, I was chosen by the Mayor of Bremerton to teach English in Japan for three years. Upon my return to the United States, I immediately went back to school for my teaching certificate in Elementary Education. I also worked as a Para educator in a special education classroom where I continued to use my teaching skills. I’m currently working as a guest teacher for two different school districts, teaching nearly all subjects in grades K-12.
The reason I chose to go to school for my teaching certificate is that I've always been passionate about learning. I think the best teachers are excited to constantly learn new things. My teaching ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all children can learn you just have to find their style. Each person has their own unique learning style. That is why tutoring can truely help students become better learners because a one on one approach can help them find their style and become their own advocates.
I knew I wanted to teach at grade 5. All my education from that time on was directed to become a teacher. During my graduate work at the University of Oregon I majored in Reading. It has become my passion to help all students love reading and become comfortable reading. This passion has been driven by the fact that I am dyslexic and understand how difficult it is to not be able to read well. During my teaching career I have worked with all grades and developmental levels. My Resume is a much better indicator of my experience along with meeting me in person.
