I'm not going to lie; I hated school when I was younger. Some people might think this a drawback when hiring someone as a tutor, but I think it has made me more sympathetic to students who struggle, who don't enjoy school and who need someone to give them a reason to excel. I ascribe to Gardner's 8 Stages of Intelligence theory, which purports the belief that every student is gifted, intelligent and capable of learning in a manner that conducive to their own unique style. As a teacher, I use myself as a tool to help facilitate the learning process.
I have a social work background which, in my work has always been integrated with some component of teaching, both in and out of the classroom. Teaching on a one-to-one basis is the most personal and rewarding experience that a teacher may have. Part of the reason for this dynamic between the teacher and the student is because a student can learn many times over when it becomes a one-to-one basis. Of course, if a student is predisposed towards a particular learning style that is effective then it must be utilized. Reward and knowledge must be a constant.
