Painting is one of my top subjects! I am a classically trained painter, having studied under Sheldon Tapley at Centre College and Jacob Collins at the Grand Central Academy of Art in Manhattan. I have experience teaching drawing and painting to a variety of ages and experience levels. I specialize in painting from life, including: portraits, figures, fabric, still-life and old master copies.

I have been painting for over ten years, first earning my degree from Centre College and later studying classical drawing and painting in New York City at the Grand Central Academy of Art. Since returning to Kentucky, I have been working from my studio in Mount Sterling and exhibiting my work throughout central Kentucky. I have been teaching private and group classes, focusing on master copies and portrait and still-life drawing. I have tutored privately, helping to build student's portfolios as they apply to college or other art programs (such as the Governor's School for the Arts). I have been a guest judge for the Student Art Show at the Gateway Regional Arts Center and have participated in the Paris Art Walk and Lexington Gallery Hop. I love to learn, which is why I love teaching children. Every child learns differently, because of this, teaching is a learning process as well! I believe that students learn best through hands on activities that allow them to internalize the concepts they are struggling with. Whether it is using math manipulatives to understand multiplication and division or using letter tiles to understand consonant blends in reading, hands on activities are the best way to learn.
As an education major at Berea College, I volunteered my services as a tutor three nights a week in addition to my student teaching and education courses. I work best with pre-school, kindergarten, and first graders and have had lots of experience with Spanish speaking children. I consider myself a hands-on teacher. I believe that all children can excel in the right learning environment when given opportunity to experience and experiment with learning tools. I love using music to teach reading and math. Most children just need someone to be kind, patient and understanding.
