A Little Bit About Me...

Progressing through graduate school and working as a undergraduate student demonstrator allowed me to define learning as a personal process of growth. Being able to ask questions and actually attempt to answer those questions was extremely motivating. Involving and motivating students presents its challenges, but my goal of individualizing learning creates an open and comfortable environment where students can feel free to ask questions, make mistakes, and challenge themselves. It is by breaking down the barriers to learning that students can face their own misconceptions.

A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.

I approach tutoring with the assumption that every student wants to learn more but isn’t always sure how to proceed. Each student brings his or her own perspective to understanding a subject. I try to find where the student is having difficulty and how they process the material i.e. are they a visual learner, auditory, kinesthetic learner etc… It is also important to address any misconceptions they have and to do so early so that they can build a sound base for learning. I prefer to work one on one with a single student, I do my very best to make my student feel comfortable and ready to learn.
