Competence Starts with Confidence

Ever since I was in Honors English in high school back in the seventies (yes, I am a "well seasoned" teacher versus "an old teacher"), I knew that I wanted to dedicate my college years to taking every writing and literature class I could get my hands on. Once my composition was chosen as the "model essay" in my English Comp 101 class at Adelphi University, and was read by students for many years after I graduated, I knew that I meant to be a teacher and share my love for literature, writing, and "coloring outside the lines," inspiring students to be reflective, thoughtful and creative readers, writers, thinkers, and speakers. I served as a tutor, primarily for English, History, and writing, for three years while attending Southern Vermont College. Following graduation, I worked for three years as a paraprofessional for Leland & Gray Union High School. While working in this capacity there were several one on one situations similar to the relationship that exists between tutors and their students. In addition to the aforementioned subjects I tutored while in college, I also assisted students in other areas such as basic math and general science.
I primarily use the Socratic Method (question and answer) as my teaching style. I believe that asking students the right questions helps them to learn the information. A Little Bit About Me...

I base my teaching on the pholosophy of Eli Siegal: "Aesthetic Realism". It states that "All beauty is a making one of opposites, and a making one of opposites is what we are going after in ourselves" Thus, I relate the subject matter in hand to students' personal lives. For example, if we are learning Le Chartelier's Princlple, which concerns the response of a chemical reaction to stress, I have my students discuss the types of stress they experience, and their responses. We compare this to the beautifully precise and appropriate reaction in Chemistry, where the response is never inapproriate, insufficent or in excess. This method has also taught me that I have much to learn from my students and their life experiences. .
