As a graduate student, I tutored 5th graders in Math at Montevallo Elementary School. Through this experience, I learned that all students are different and require different ways and methods of teaching. I began to understand that being “in-tune” with children’s different learning styles was very important to be successful in reaching them. I’ve also tutored a 3rd grade boy in reading for one summer. Helping the child build fluency and comprehension were my two main goals. We also worked on understanding word meaning and phonological awareness. During high school, my teacher requested that I help others in my class and I realized how much I loved helping others understand how accounting works. Also in helping my children with their school work, I have learned that each child is different and learns in different ways. I would describe my style of teaching as finding out how a particular student learns best and work form that foundation. Some learn better by seeing an example and then working it out on their own with someone to consult if they get stuck. Other learn better with what they hear and others what they read.
